Well its certainly been a while since I've updated my journal mainly because we've been doing so much stuff its incredible so I'm gonna run through it pretty quick, otherwise I'd be here all day! Since boxing day things have just been a blur!
- To start of with I have to mention the fact that we've bought a car! Can't believe I forgot that in the last entry! Its an absolute beaut! Its a 1989 Ford Falcon estate! Air con/power steering and its an automatic! Never driven one of those before. Its banana yellow and is pretty battered from the outside but it runs like a dream and its only done 250'000 miles! We've had no problems so far lets hope it stays that way! Her name is 'Genie' by the way!
- 27th Dec - A group of us from Railway Square took a trip and checked out Bondi beach, it was us three, then Chris and Ruben from our room and Tim from down the corridor. It was a good day out but the beach was well packed, the photos say it all really, I enjoyed doing a bit of body surfing though, the waves are pretty big and vicious!
- 28th Dec - Thought I'd sample the delights of Sydney's sights so I went for a walk around the city with Ruben our roommate. He's from Barcelona and is a bit of a geezer. We walked all the way through Hyde Park, through the Botanical Gardens, around the harbour checking out the bridge and the Opera House. Then we met a couple of Rubens mates and caught the ferry to Manly beach and chilled out there. Awesome day loved it!
- 29th Dec - From what I can remember we just chilled out untill the evening, the weather was pretty poor which prevented us from going to the open air cinema so we checked out Kings Cross instead with another one of our roommates. Kings Cross is a wicked night out but very strange you have to hunt through the strip clubs to find a decent dance club luckily we found an awesome one called 'mum' and had a class night dancing away! G'bo had taken some bird on a date that night!
- 30th Dec - We met Jamie, Anthony and his girlfriend Steph and checked out the aquarium which was cool, highlight was definately the Platypus! Afterwards we got some snacks and because the weather was better we headed to the open air cinema and watched Pirates of the Caribbean, theres something about watching a film outside that I love it was well good especially as there were massive bats flying just above your head - quality!
And now it comes to New Years Eve, and what a New Years Eve it was, probably the best I've had! We woke up early and met everyone (me, Lee, Warren, Mick (who we'd met again the night before), Jamie, Antony, Steph and Tim) in the kitchen. The plan was to head down grab some booze and go to one of the viewing points the council had set up. The first bit went smoothly we stocked up on booze and headed down to the harbour for about 12ish. The place was already buzzing, people everywhere, the weather was awesome and there was a sense that something big was about to happen.
The view wasn't the best at Circular Quay - too close to the bridge so as we all fancied a beer we headed to 'The Rocks' where we had a few beers in the Irish pubs and generally had a bit of a warm up! It was a good start to the day! We devised a plan to get the ferry to other side of the harbour where there was another viewpoint where you could bring your own booze. So this is what we did, after arriving at our destination which was a only ten minutes on the ferry something pretty weird happened. Jamie suddenly spotted a group of about seven people that he knew from uni and thought would probably never see again and here they were in Sydney the same place we were, crazy! So we parked up next to them and proceeded to chill out and drink, we had an awesome view right opposite the Opera House you could see the bridge and all the fireworks barges, I love it when a plan comes together! We played a few drinking games and generally had a laugh untill nine o'clock when the first set of fireworks kicked off. These were the best and biggest fireworks I had ever seen, absolutely amazing! If that was the small show what were the midnight fireworks going to be like! After the 9 show a lot of the families left and it was more of a party atmosphere! We continued to drink untill midnight when the fireworks spectacular begun, there was a big countdown and then boom! It all kicked off, fireworks everywhere, a light show on the bridge and more firemorks, all of this lasted for about half an hour, must have cost a fortune! Loved it! The party wasn't over yet though, we continued to party untill the small hours began getting larger! Unfortunatley we had missed the last ferry home and had to sleep in the park only to be awoken by the rain at half six the following morning! The ferries were running again and we took a trip home, it was ace though coz we witnessed the sunrise over Sydney harbour!
- 1st Jan - Slept!
- 2nd Jan - It was time to leave Sydney, we loaded up Genie and hit the road to the Blue Mountains, Mick came along with us, the journey wasn't long about an hour and a half, we checked in at Backpackers Central. The weather wasn't looking good though we went to see the threee sisters but couldn't see anything and the hostel turned out to be really poor so we left the following day!
- 3rd/4th Jan - Packed up Genie again and headed through National Parks (nice drive, crossed the Wisemans Ferry) for about 6 hours untill we reached 'the Great Lakes' where we stayed in Forster. It was a proper little Aussie holiday town but had pretty coool scenery with massive lakes and a 9 mile beach. Much better than the Blue Mountains. We had some food and a few beers then the following day we hired some kayaks and cruised around the lakes for hours seeing huge Pelican type birds catching fish right in front of us and stopping on the odd sand mound to have a swim. After we'd been kayaking we decided to make use of the hostels BBQ facility, we got tonnes of food from Woolworths (a supermarket over here apparently!) and whacked a shrimp on the barbie, we had loads of food, so much we couldn't finish it all!
We checked out of our hostel and began an epic 10 hour journey to Nimbin, the hippy capital of Aussie. We drove through more national parks and stopped at one of the free BBQ places and finished off the food from the previous night, good work! Nimbin was quality so surreal, crazy hippies everywhere just smoking away in small cafes, madness. The place we stayed was pretty cool it consisted of teepees with the odd wagon around the place and the odd tree house! Class!
While we were in Nimbin we decided to visit a huge waterfall and trek to the base to have a swim. It was all going fine untill the path suddenly stopped when we met a river! We thought the path would follow the river so we ended up climbing over mega slippy boulders and generally going further and further into the jungle for about an hour - bad idea! there were massive lizards and spiders everywhere you look or put your hand! Scary, I saw the biggest spider I have ever seen, stayed well clear of that one! After realising we were gonna get lost we decided to head back the way we came which was a mission and head back up the path we came down - good idea! I was pretty worried at one stage but we made it back in one piece! And it was an absolute adventure, I bet not many people have stepped foot where we had that day!
Well that brings me to where I am now after a short drive we are now in Byron bay and its awesome, like a bigger better Newquay! I'm looking forward to bit of Cheeky Monkeys action and we're booked on a three day learn to surf course, I've always wanted to learn to surf, starts tomorrow at ten in the morning, can't wait!
