Well I've been in Byron Bay for the last four days and now we've travelled in the Genie slightly up the coast to Brisbane or 'Brisy' as the Aussies would call it (they just whack a 'y' on the end of every word!).
Byron Bay was awesome definately reccommended, probably my favourite place in Aussie so far! We stayed in a place called the Arts FActory which is this kind of hippy type place with loads of funky abodes like old western style wagons, teepees and the love shack! The place is so chilled out with didgereedo lessons (you can even make your own didge!), bushtucka walks and tonnes of activities going on everywhere or you can just chill by the pool! They also have a sweet cinema which is proper oldskool like no other cinema! They have their own bar too called the 'Buddha Bar' which is an old pig shed, dead good atmosphere! Loved it, the only place to stay in Byron!
Anyway the first day we were there we enrolled on a three day surf course. The first day consisted of a bit of instruction on the beach and then basically its over to you to get to grips with catching waves (lying down to begin with) and tackling the waves themselves! Half way through the day we were cruising on waves on our fronts and later in the day we were standing up on whitewater waves, such a good feeling when you catch one, I loved it! The following day it was more of the same practising catching the wave and standing up, we got a bit further into the sea and started catching some green waves! By the end of the third day we were out with the big boys catching the bad boy waves. We did pretty well and our teacher said we should keep doing the same and try out smaller boards until we can use the proper fibreglass boards instead of foam boards! It was awesome, we can surf!
We had a couple of nights out in Byron, sampling the delights of Cheeky Monkeys which is just like a student bar and a wicked club whos name escapes me, but it was class! We met some cool people at the surf course and they came out with us too, we also bumped into our old roommates from Sydney which was pretty crazy!
We're now in Brisbane which is nothing spectacular, just chilling for a bit really until we head out and do some 4x4 driving on Fraser Island. I've cut my knee pretty badly surfing so I'm trying to rest that but hopefully I can go to Steve Irwin's zoo tomorrow!
