This Morning we Explored around the campsites. one of the employees told us there was the skeleton of a ship just off the shore at the end of the campsites. We went down and did not see anything, but we did have fun playing by the water edge. MB found a plank that looked like it might have at one time been part of a ship, or has just been sitting on the side of the lake for a while.
We then drove to the trail head for the apostle islands National lake Shore. This is a chain of 21 islands in Lake Superior that are comprised of sandstone. After year of the water washing up on shore it created caves that are under the islands. We were advised the best way to see the caves was by kayak but due to time we decided to hike in.
The hike was muddy, and it appeared they were in the process of reparing the trail with raised boards for the trail surface. Once we arrived at the sea caves we were precariously moving along the edge to take pictures. The funny part is as we went along the trail we were able to see what we were just standing on. Unbenounced to us we were standing on a cliff edge of only about one foot of dirt. The rest has been washed away. Pretty amazing, and scary all at the same time.
On our way out we did get stuck in the rain, but it make for a memorable mud hopping adventure through the very tippy top of Wisconsin.
From there we drove through Deluth, WI and stopped for dinner at a chain barbaque place called Grizzlies. Next Stop, Mall of America.
