As we are driving from Monument Valley to Cortez the landscape loos like the roadrunner and wiley coyote could pop out at any moment. Int the distance we could see a piling of very ANGRY looking clouds. Large grey clouds stacked on tops of tan clouds. It was like nothing we had ever seen. I had been warned of dust storms and how they can take the paint off of your car, but this was unavoidable.
It went on for easily 50 square miles and we were driving right into it. We decided to bite the bullet and drive through it. We put the ventilation on recirculate and drove into the 'cloud'. We found out that it was infact a dust storm, combined with smoke from all of the wild fires in southwestern Colorado. Currently there are over 25000 acres burning in the valley to the north of mesa verde. You could see the red glow of the fire in the distance and billowing smoke.
