woke at 8am latest I have slept in this country yet. Banana pancakes on the deck with coffee and juice. Lazy morning talking with Hasan our butler about Islam and its relation to other religions. They believe that first the Torah was the word of God, followed by Moses and the Bible, which led to Mohammed spreading the word and the Qu'ran. They too believe that Jesus was the first prophet, his mother was Mary but God was NOT his father. This discussion was very interesting ending with Hasan inviting me to his village for evening prayer and a lesson on Islam. I am keen to read their book in our language to perhaps gain a better understanding of Muslims so I accepted! Nic and I then got dressed , actually applied makeup for the first time since we have been here to go into Sengiggi. I dinkied Nic on the scooter as she is too scared to ride one and it was my first time with a passenger on the back. We went and had coffee first, with lots of photo stops along the way. We then went to the beach which was spectacular. From there to the art markets where I brought a purple watch, a blue dress and and a bracelet for my former sister in law to be Nikki. Nic also brought a hair clip and a red dress. Back to hotel for a chicken burger snack and a swim in pool as it was a very hot day! Hasan arrived at 4.30 to get me. He rode my scooter with me on back and OMG what an experience! Deep into the rural areas we went with peak hr traffic that was scary to say the least. So beautiful and full of LIFE though, many Muslims coming out to eat and celebrate as the sun was setting on the 16th day pf Ramadan. Markets everywhere serving food and everything you can think of. Never will I be told I tailgate in Australia again. When you come here you will understand what I mean. 80kph about 1ft from cars and scooters in front of us all the way!.THAT is tailgating, one false move and were road kill! Nearly 2hrs and we arrive at Hasan's village. His family were so welcoming with food and drinks from his brother's shop. All the children came out to see the Australian lady giggling and shy whilst i drank coffee and they attempted to read parts of the Qu'ran to me. Watched them wash to go and pray and touched Hasan accidentally and he had to wash again before handling the book and entering Mosque, whilst I watched from outside, with a mango jelly and the children. I pulled out my camera and they all crowded around me to see the photos I had of Australia and the snow intrigued them. showed them video of me snowboarding and they were awed to say the least. I brought another dress from Hasan's brother that was thicker and pretty for the ride home as i was cold. We stopped in Mataram for some dinner on the way back and the entire 4 hrs I saw no other tourists in the region other than me. I was the main attraction to EVERYBODY there and back, but in a good way. Never seen so many Indonesians so curious and in one place. Saw rice paddys, cemeterys, temples and the most AMAZING mosques all the way. Information and sensory overloaded, we got back to my hotel at 10pm and I showered, watched some tv and slept till I was woken by arguing and praying at 3am! Still, couldn't have asked for a better cultural experience. Hasan and I will now be friends for life! Wow so humbled by the whole experience-thank you Hasan. Pls come visit me in Australia so I can extend the same hospitality!
