Aahh Tropical sun and beaches is there anything better??? Oh you are cold and its raining, well all we have to say is Buuhuu you!!!
hmm enough teasing for one day... no wait ha ha ha its nice and varm.... Yup that was it we think. Well as you can see we have once again crossed a border, and are now in beautiful Cambodia, but as allways we will start where we left off last, so lean back and enjoy.
Just to recap something from the last blog, when we wrote that Tuz was feeling a bit under the weather last time, we might have been lying... a little bit. Truth is she got food poisoning and passed out on the bathroomfloor, nearly smashing her gorgeous front teeth in the process. Once Trine had shaken life back into her, she ran and got our leader Troungle Medicine Man, who seemed to think that it was because of a "bad"wind she was feeling sick, so he started rubbing tiger balm all over her (F.Y.I. when your tommy is killing you you do not want people to rub it with mint s***! Allright, not a great idea). After Trine had swalloved a fit of giggles over the evil wind comment he made, she demanded a doctor for her suffering comerade, and about 10 min. later the lovely Doctor Dung came with suringes and pills, and made Tuz feel a lot better! Yay pills. But anyway after 5 days of suffering through the strict diet of steamed rice, bread and water Tuz is now back to her mentally impaired crazy self, so nothing to worry about.
Anyways lets get back to the travels shall we. after our last day in Hoi An, we went to Da Nang in order to catch a daytrain to Nha Trangh, a costal city, that for some reason is a famous resort, not that the beaches were that great. But we had a nice couple of days just lazying about on the beach. Tuz tried to conquer the monsterous waves, but all she got for her troubles was a load of rocks in her bikini. trust me its not really that comfy.
after the rather dubious experience we headed to Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City, depending on whom you ask, not even the Vietnamese are completly sure. It was a crazy city, there were so many scooters, that you often could not see the road beneath them. It was mental trying to cross the street, but then again what would we do without our daily cross the street adrenalin rush? We would get bored really!!
we went on a tour of the Mekong river delta on the day we arrived in the city, but halfway there our bus suddently broke down, and we had to wait 50 min. for a replacement, and it wasn't like we could go out of the bus, because we were litterally parked in the middle of a 6 lane road. Vietnamese people just do not care. once we arrived at the Mekong river, we had a great day first sailling to an island and then driving motorwagons to different location on said island. luckily nothing else broke down that day!
the next day we got up pretty early, and went to the War Remnant Museum. It has hundreds of photos taken during the Vietnam war. It was really grafic, and after a while you almost could not look at more pictures of scared civilians and dying soldiers. It was actually a very good museum. That afternoon Tuz went on a trip to the CuChi tunnel complex. A large forest area with hundreds of kilometers of tunnels used by the vietcom during the war. It was an odd experience, especially because the guides sounded so proud of the nasty traps they had dug in order to capture american soldiers during wartime. Usually you are just happy to have won, you dont take pride in the mean with wich you have done it. But then again it might just be harder for me because I know people who have fought in the war.
That evening we had our final dinner with Troungle (thank god) before we were handed over to our Cambodian leader Kakada, who is to stay with us for the rest of our trip! No we did not really like Troungle, he was annoying and he rubbbed tigerbalm ALL over me!!! Grr.... well almost he made Trine do it, but still!
the next day we departed for the Cambodian border. We were a bit scared because our Vietnamese visas had expired the day before we were leaving, and we were not sure how the officials would react, especially since the went crazy when we were going in to Vietnam. After waiting in line at the border for nearly 30 min we were alloved to cross over without as muh as a "bad tourist". They simply did not care.
our first destination in Cambodia was Phnom penh. It is a rather nice and quiet city, especially compared to Saigon. The first night there Kakada hired some Tuctucs to drive us around the city, it was great we really love the odd transportationthings they have in asia. We ended up at a local food marked and Tuz ate a Grasshopper. they taste like dung, so if someone ever offers you one, for the love of god say NO!! She was still spitting half an hour after she ate it.
the next day we only had half a day, before we had to go to our final homestay, so we joined a couple of girls in our group and went to see the royal palace. It was really beautiful, and it had a more airy feel to it than many of the other palaces we have seen, but then again, it was never intended to be a fortress like the forbidden city in china.
Once we had seen it we went back to the hotel and got on the bus that was to take us to our homestay. The homestay was located in one of the poorest areas of Cambodia, and we stayed at a small village were they had neither electricity or running water. They had a couple of nevly built wells that connected to a nearby waterfall, and the fammily we stayed with had a couple of neonlights hooked up to large carbatteries. Otherwise we had to use our own torches or candels. the Farmers had lived in the area for generations, but the village we lived in was only 10 years old. te villagers had to flee in the 70s, and becauseof the landmines left behind by the civil war, they were not abel to return before 1998.
this homestay was definetly the best one we have had. in the evening after we had eaten we sat outside on a tarp together with the family and talked to one another with Kakada as our guide, because none og the people there were able to speak english. the next morning we got up early and watched as people got ready for work, and we played a game of FlipFlop with the youngest sun and a friend of his before we had to leave. It was great.
After our homestay we came here to the lovely beaches of Sihanoukville. Yesterday we went on a jungle boattrip with a crazy guide who sailed into trees, and we fed monkeys and children... it was a lovely day! and it is a nice warm day today as well so now we will head to the beach!! So see you soon, and remember we want to know what is goin on in your lives as well so leave us an e-mail.
