Siena is the site of the famous horse race, Il Palio, that lasts 75 seconds to be precise and it's run twice a year around the main piazza called Il Campo. We visited the piazza but missed out on the race by about two months, oh well, can't win them all. Apparently you can watch the race on the internet nowadays so i guess that will have to suffice.
The city is a beautiful one although we didn't have much time here, we literally stopped for a couple of hours on our way down to Rome. The old part of the town is very much the winding cobbled streets you might imagine of historic Italy and the piazza has a grand fountain and a super ambience to it.
I would imagine the atmosphere here would be spectacular at race time. All the neighbouring areas of Siena have a real fight over it, the winner goes into the cathedral with his (I'd like to say /her but I don't think women race in this, yet...) horse to be awarded the prize.
Onto Rome now...
