Introduction to Rome was more of the infamous Italian driving which i think that I am starting to get a handle on, and a pretty impressive bit of grid lock without the grids but plenty of gesticulating from the resident Brunos and Marias. Next surprise was at the campsite where we were staying which included some 500 German school kids who had turned the site into Euro Disney, with their own catering company Hoffman Reisen (Hoffman Rising - like a Phoenix). Each night back at the camp site we would hear some form of oration whipping up the kiddies into a Justin Timberlake-concert like delerium. Not sure what the dude was saying but the kiddies were loving it.As for Rome and the Vatican, lot of old buildings, many crumpled and queues to monuments and museums that looked more like soviet era bread queues. Decided after walking for 15 minutes to get to the back of the Vatican City queue, which we should caught a bus for, that this is nonsense and instead paid for a tour. Bit more ridiculous amounts of Italian hot air from the tour group by not telling anyone what was going on regarding setting off for the tour for an hour or so, before finally setting off for the Vatican. We both admitted that although we are not the tour types, our Serbian art historian guide was ridiculously knowledgable we definitely got so much more out of the 3 hour tour then we would have should we just strolled and looked and the tops art on the walls and on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. The city of Rome is just one giant monument so to bore you of the details managed to see monuments, monuments and more monuments. The camera did take a beating of all the beautiful buildings, statues and fountains that make up Rome. Colosseum was defintely a highlight and you can only imagine the misery that this place had on those unfortunate to be the star performers. No sign of Russell Crowe though.
We both really enjoyed Rome, the hussle and bustle was great to be around as a tourist but i think opinions would be very different if we were there in the heat of summer. So if you are thinking of coming to Rome do it in Spring or Autumn, also if you dont want to wait in a Russian bread queue for the Forum, head to the Palatine to grab your ticket for both places and walk past the 1000 people in line - brilliant!
