The main reason people come to this part of Hungary is to partake in a bit of wine tasting so we figured we´d follow in a thousand footsteps and see if it´s all it´s cracked up to be. For the umpteenth time on our travels we arrived at a supposed all-year-round campsite which had its gates well and truly shut. What to do....we knew there was a campsite 28km away but that was no use to us if we wanted to sample wine in a country with 0.0% alcohol driving limit, so we opted for a night of luxury. There is a hotel in Eger, two minutes walk from the wine caves and it has some of the loveliest people in Hungary working there; for 50 euros we got a 3 star room (which was so big we could have sub-let to other travellers had there been any around) with a huge breakfast and the use of the Wellness Centre, sauna, jacuzzi, pool, etc. From Nad to hotel, it was a treat. We made our way to the famous horseshoe wine cave area and proceeded to taste about 7 or 8 different wines between us. This may not sound a lot when you are accustomed to wine tasting in Australia or the UK, but here a ´taste´ is a full 100ml glass and you pay pennies for the privilege. The wines we were given at first were not the best and they did have some pricier ones on the menus so we opted for them instead. In some places we were given full glasses for free. The part I loved the most about these caves was that you can go in with your empty plastic bottle/flagon/barrel and ask for it to be filled. Obviously for us this wasn´t the most practical option as you are left with litre and a half bottles that need to be consumed within a day once opened or within a couple of weeks if you keep the lid on, and even we can´t drink 1 and a half litres of red wine in an evening. Still, we did come away with one huge bottle forced upon us so I guess we´ll have to use it for mulled wine on some chilly evening in the future. We staggered up the hill back to the hotel and spent the rest of the evening luxuriating in the heat of the sauna and the boiling hot hotel room, we shouldn´t complain about the heat, we were just flummoxed by the fact that all the heaters switched off and the poor girl at reception did her best to help us but couldn´t do much about it. By the next night in freezing cold Nad we were longing for that heat.
