Left Sydney on Monday at 7.30pm on the Greyhound. Took 14 hours to get to Byron (longer than our flight from the UK!!). The overnight was a good option though as we saved on a night in a hostel and it actually went pretty quickly. I was sorted with 24 on the ipod - amazing how quickly time can pass! Woke up at 9am in Byron and despite the cloudy weather I fell in love with the place instantly. Our hostel is really nice and opposite the famous Cheeky Monkeys nightclub. Must be fate!
We spent the first few days chilling on the beach or by our pool and walking around the town. Finally booked the remainder of our trips up the coast as well as our bus dates so now we are totally organised until we get to Melbourne. So nice to not have to think about it all and can get on with enjoying ourselves.
Still can't get away from the Guerns! Jess and Mat arrived in the same hostel as us a day later and Luke's surf camp ended up here on Friday. Such a small world. Has been nice spending some more time with them and also met loads more people who are making their way up the coast.
I have spent literally every night dancing on the tables in Cheeky Monkeys. got a tad too drunk on the first night and ended up falling off. Managed to brush myself off and get back on, attempting to regain a small sense of dignity....which I soon lost when I fell off again!!! I was then (apparently) escorted out of the club - dont worry Dad - they throw lots of people out - not just me! Anyway, my friend Chris luckily pointed me in the direction of our hostel (literally across the street) and I woke up in my bed with a tres grande hangover and memory loss! Comedy night though. And luckily they let me in the next day! My bruises are awesome! This is my second major injury of the trip so far. Somehow forgot to mention my spectacular fall in Singapore (Monsson rain + slippery flip flops + tiled floor = the most hilarious fall you have ever seen.) I was running to get out of the rain and my legs slipped out in front of me, right up in the air and I landed on my back/bum. It was so funny I couldnt stop laughing despite the pain. Was like a slapstick comedy sketch. And before you ask, no, I wasnt drunk!!
On Wednesday mat was ill so Jess Jen and I went to Nimbin - the infamous hippy town outside Byron. It is such a weird place. There are kids and mothers trying to sell you weed or 'cookies' everywhere you go. Our bus was a really good laugh and we had a great day out. We went swimming in a waterfall where we could do a 30ft cliff jump into the plunge pool. it was awesome. Then had a really nice BBQ before heading back on the bus with pleanty of booze and retro tunes to keep us going. Such a fun day.
Got very burnt on the beach. The UV here is crazy. Had to say bye to Gigantor and Stinger which was sad as I dont think we will see them again before home. Jen and I took out bikes this morning and cycled up to the lighthouse marking the most easterly point of Australia. Now, after a night in Cheeky Monkeys coupled with the overpowering heat and the fact that I have done zero exercise in 6 weeks - it wasnt an easy trip. In fact, just before the top I felt a bit light headed, so stopped, got off, and threw up!! So embarrassing, especially when this couple stopped and asked if I was ok. I sheephishly stood up, tried to look cool and shrug it off. Not cool! Am now a tad concerned that this reaction to exercise has something to do with how unfit I have become since Ive been away. Luckily our next hostel has a gym!
I have really loved Byron. It has such a chilled out surfer atmosphere. Loads of backpackers around and the locals are so lovely. Had some wicked roomates too! This afternoon we have surf lessons booked - something tells me Im going to suck badly!! But really excited anyway. We are off to Surfers Paradise on Tuesday. Hopefully will get less bruises there!!!
