I left my (oh so cheesy) heart in San Francisco, headed out of the hotel and picked up a very fine hire car for the journey south along Califonia Highway 1. Some of the beaches along this stretch of coast are stunning and completely free of people. We stopped off a few times to take some photo's and arrived in Monterey around 2pm. We checked in at the Incontinental Clement and couldn't believe that we had been upgraded to a suite facing the Pacific Ocean! Apparently, they had a free few rooms and we got lucky - I really do need to start playing the lotto. The room was amazing and more like a small apartment than a hotel room - the balcony jutted out over the Pacific, allowing us to watch the sea otters playing in the kelp. We spent the rest of the afternoon taking the car on the 17 mile sceanic drive along the coast to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Just stunning coastal vistas surrounding golf courses including the famous Pebble Beach where Clint Eastwood has a home. Carmel is a really pretty little place with lots of unusual shops and restaurants. Once back to Monterey, we dined at The Fish Hopper on Cannery Row before heading back to wine on the balcony with the sound of the ocean lulling us to sleep. So, pretty good day then......
