Despite the barman bringing our change at 5.30 am and waking us up, we had a decent, non-mosquito influenced sleep!
We got a ride from the owner's daughter to the town where we waited in a cafe for our bus to Nkhata Bay that would take 5-6 hours!
We got hassled by our friend again and his mate for more things, so me and Jack got our trading hats on! Jack had a pen and bracelet for 250kw (pound), and then traded his pink bandana which he didn't wear for a bracelet and 3 glass bottles we had drank!
I wanted to lighten my load, so I traded a pair of socks and boxers for a bracelet and a nail clipper (as I had 4!), half a pack of paracetomol, some chewy, a Qatar airways sleep blindfold and some socks for a wooden pen with a fish eagle carved on top!
Then came the sweaty, crammed, steaming bus journey with asses in my face, a woman spitting her sweetcorn on me (accident I think!) baby's crying and way too much think-time! Jack even got to witness baby's ass being changed.
I had another 20kw corn on the cob but this time it was delicious and boiled!
Jack made friends with a passenger, who told him his life story how he started working in the sugar cane business, then rubber taping, then having kids and setting up a fishing business which is now in several places in Malawi. The guy was chuffed with himself and Jack was more than chuffed at the guy's achievements. Ambition!
We walked to Big Blue Star Backpackers, which was an amazing location on a hill but sloping into the lake. Bar at the top, restaurant, reception and tv room halfway, dorms and chalets and then a sundeck next to the rocks and the water.
We jumped straight in the water with clothes on as the bus journey had made us feel rank*.
Swimming in the lake we saw dozens of species of fish, some of which fluorescent blue.
We took a short walk into town for some munch, where I found my new love, Sobo - Cherry Plum. The best soft drink ever. Maybe even better than Irn Bru - and that's saying something!
Got chatting to some Brits from Somerset and Exeter and an Aussie whilst admiring the views of the stars and fishermen way out at sea at night.
Also met our friend Will, who plays for London Wasps Academy and on nature watch - I heard rustling in the bushes, so took a photo using night vision and captured a massive crab.
