An early rise so we could say our thanks our goodbyes to Kath, Andy and the kids. They were very good to us. I then abused the Arsenal supporting taxi driver on the way to the airport after Spurs' emphatic turnaround! In the airport, a little worried as power went off for a few seconds but then we chatted to a lovely local chap on his way to Deutschland.
A several hour flight consisted of plenty of cards (of which Jack has sorted his life out a little but still some way behind) and soft drinks.
Arriving in Malawi expecting hot weather, we got thunder and lightning. To make things worse the international airport at the capital was a 20quid taxi away from the bloody city and place where we were staying. No buses neither!
After the long drive, we arrived at Mabuya Camp Lodge. It was an awesome, student-like backpackers place with lots of scenic trees and plants, a cosy little reception/bar next to the dorms where we were staying, chalets, a-frames, a restaurant, pool table and a nice swimming pool. Big camping area as well. Anyone going travelling, get a tent - will save you loads! Dorms were the next cheapest thing and had lockers and mozzy nets on the beds. Mine weren't very effective as I had quite a lot of bites including a massacred right tricep putting me well ahead of Jack in the bite league....
The outdoor showers and sinks were also really nice and warm and we discovered the water was fine to drink!
In the pissing down rain, me and Jacko trekked into town with our macs on (thanks mom for ensuring I took one), and we purchased crisps, bread and drinks for our lunch. The idea was that crisp sandwiches would save us money and they did, they just weren't very filling!
I accidentally took out 6quid from the cash point (1500 Malawi Kwacha) after it asked if I needed more time when I was checking the amount was enough! I needed 15000 Kwacha but it made u type the amount in again! And this tard did it wrong and very annoyed considering it charges!
We walked back to the lodge in the muggy, wet conditions to have a couple of beers. The lodge was awesome because you make tonnes of friends and everyone is in the same boat.
We got chatting to a Brazilian and he looked identical to Jesus. Giant beard, hardly wore shoes and clothes, didn't take Malaria tablets, worked in Mozambique killing crocs and only 21 years old. LAD. lol
Jack and I indulged in the lodge's daily meals, sweet and sour and chilli con carne respectively, quite tasty. Cost about 2.50 pounds.
Around where we were staying we have seen plenty of giant dragonflies, giant blue coloured like bumblebees, giant beetles, geckos everywhere eatin termite flies (of which we hit the season where there were millions and millions of them out!), frogs, toads, etc.
In the evening a girl called Abbie Cole invited us to play pool with her and her friend Charlie. We had a few drinks and played plenty of pool. Got chattin to a 28-yr-old Aussie who hates her home country and was travelling for 2 years, a Dutch doctor lady and the two English girls from Brighton and Colchester completing some medical work experience at the local hospital. There were also loads of American Christians travelling round Africa - turned out some of them had been a horrific car crash! They were never around though, always hiding in their rooms, on the net or having really OTT heart-to-hearts which people could hear....bit odd to everyone else.
We were the last ones awake in the lodge, had to be extra quiet when going to bed, especially as I was sleeping above someone other than Jacko!
Mosquito nets didn't do the job as I got bitten to s***!
This entry took three goes to write so apologies if it's crap! Won't be able to upload more photos on here for a while but providing I don't lose my camera I will have several hundred to upload!
