Captain Tom's Voyage of Discovery
Hey - have you read my North Island entry yet? Do that first.
Nelson was our base for the next few days. After spending rather too much $$$ over the past week, I decided to have an activity free day. After walking around town and reading my thrilling book on US Foreign Policy since 1938 on the beach (sad, I know) we headed off to a Karaoke bar. After watching the crazy Danes go and do their now infamous rendition of 'Ghost Busters' and Karen the Californian perform 'I touch myself' I was ready to hit the stage but it was not to be: I was the only one in the group who had remembered the key to get into the hostel and people were getting tired. The karaoke fun continued on the bus to Christchurch. After taking a supporting role in Bohemian Rhapsody and the Grease mega-mix I took centre stage and performed my common room favourite: Tribute by Tenacious D. Heehee.
Before we got into Christchurch, we had a few hours in Kaikoura. Kaikoura is one of the best places to go if you want to swim with Dolphins. However, the waters were still too rough so instead we all went to the beach and had a lazy few hours. We were all glad that we could head off to Christchurch early because we had managed to get tickets to the All Blacks Vs Australia. I was made an honary Kiwi after getting an All Blacks jersey. The night was one of the best I have had on my trip. We all drank lots of cheap beer and nasty pies at the stadium so after the game (NZ kicked ass by the way) we were a bit giddy and a mass pile on in the middle of the street followed. The antics on the bus back to our hotel were hilarious. After all the girls flashed every bus that we went past on came the "Baywatch'' theme tune. After a few girl ran up the aisle 'Pamela Anderson' style, there were calls for someone to take on the demanding role of the Hoffinator aka David Hasslehoff. Yes, yours truly stepped up to mark. Then Kim, from South Korea, decided to show his prowess with the resident sex doll. LMAO!
Our next destination was Fox Glacier. After a relatively quiet night, the majority of the group opted to do the half day hike on the glacier and the surrounding valley. It was a really enjoyable experience and probably the best walk I have done on my holiday. Walking on ice (with crampons) is pretty nervy at first but you get used to it. It wouldn't have been a proper walk for me If I hadn't fallen over and yes folks, I did! I was nicely walking along a patch of ice when suddenly my left leg had vanished through the ice. No drama though, as I managed to pull myself out easily enough. After a quick lunch stop and more fun and games, it was time to head to Queenstown: home of the bungee jump!
Ta ta for now, TOM
