Well if may have been a bit of time between this and our last blog, but we have kept ourselves busy enough! This blog is actually just giving a brief run down of what we did some weeks ago now (around 17th-20th of June) when we were in London the first time (before going to Worthing). Namely, these are our trips to the Globe Theatre, the Tower of London and our "flight" on the London Eye. All of these things were great - they were also the first attractions that we paid any money to go and see! We were blessed with good weather on both the days (one day did the tower other day we did globe and eye), as you may be able to gather from the the pictures, so woo hoo for us!
Firstly the Tower! This is the scene of a story that I think Eliza has been circulating around (where I ran after some people telling a story in costume with the rest of the little kids - I am sure she can give a better description than that though). However, Eli also did something quite funny - we were walking in one of the towers as you do in the "Tower of London", and there was this really little room off to the side with absolutely nothing in it bar a window (about as bit as a toilet cubicle). It was covered by a clear sheet of plastic - Tom said "If there was something in there, it mght be useful" and Eli, knowing the plastic was there, tried to stick her head in... bonk! Anyway, other than those two events it was great, we had alot of wandering around the castle, looking at the different towers and galleries, and went on a great tour with one of the Beefeaters! One embaresssing moment happend on this tour (for Tom particularly). We were in the Chapel, and these Americans we looking to take photos (after we had just been asked not to take photos and to turn our phones off) - so Tom got a bit frustrated. Then about 10 minutes later when the Beefeater was talking, from the Toms lower leg came the sounds of "I come from a land down-under" with increasing volume (Toms message tone). Eli and Tom start frantically trying to press buttons through his pants, but to no avail - so have to take it out and turn it off... everyone had noticed at this point! TO make it worse as well, the message was from bloody Vodafone, who messaged Tom (not Eli - lucky) about 5 times a day for the first week!
The next day we ventured to another museum (by this time we were getting quite museumed-out), Shakespeares Globe Theatre. Luckily, we immediately jumped into a tour after we got their which brought the whole place to life. It was interesting to find that the Globe in London was basically set up by a bunch of Americans, and it seems to be similar with a few other places as well (Battle for example - where the Battle of Hastings was fought), with Americans backing the projects and then dying out... Anyway, it is built 90% how the original Globe would have been built, and only about 100m away from the original spot! On the tour we went into the Theatre itself (a bunch of actors were exercising on stage - skipping and prancing about, it was quite fun to watch) where the guide explain about both the construction of the theatre with the thatched roof, etc and also how the stage and actors function during the performance.
We made plans to return and watch a play as "groundlings" - meaning we only have standing room in the middle of the theatre. It is only £5, bit of a bargain (although when we tried to go, we were foiled by the fact it was sold out!) O well! We will return soon!
The London Eye was an easy 30minutes. You get 135m high, and get a great few of the surrounding City. As we were ascending, Eli discovered her fear of heights, and at one stage refused to go near the edge for a photo... but she overcame her fears and we got some crackers! If you are planning on going on the Eye, I highly recommend you book it online (there were hundreds of ppl lining up for it - we just walked straight in, picked them on from a desk with no line, and walked out).
SO! After that fairly cruddy blog, we are only about 2-3 weeks behind with what we have been doing, and that is with regular internet access! Goodluck to us on the Continent!
