T&KonTour
Friday 18 March, Martins Bay to Milford Sound and then Queenstown.
Day 3 of our Hollyford Trek involves an eight kilometre walk through the sand dunes and along the complete length of the Martins Bay sand spit. We look at the remains of Maori and hardy European habitation in this area. In some ways this is the toughest part of the trek with sections of the sand being quite soft. We make it to the northern tip just in time for the rain to come down, and also fortunately, for the jet boat to pick us up and return us to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon we board squirrel choppers for a 15 minute ride along the coast and up spectacular Milford Sound. Spooky clouds, tumbling waterfalls and sheer rock faces as we fly along this true fjord. We are met at the airport by our bus transport for the 2 hour drive back to Te Anau, and then we pick up the Toyota for another 2 hours on the road back to Queenstown. We arrive back at the St James Apartments at 6.00pm for a shower and then complete the day at a bar & grill down on the waterfront.
