Hello again
Just a quick check in from Puerto Iguacu in Argentina.
Our last day in Rio we spent on a Favela tour. It was educational, sad, fun, enlightening but overall an amazing day. It started with a motorbike ride which may have been fun if the drivers werent racing each other. Add to that the condition of the road was what you expect in a shanty town and it was pretty scary. We then walked through the Favela meeting the locals, seeing the sights and hearing stories about the place. For those interested it was called Rocinha and is next to one of the most upmarket districts of Rio, Ipanema.
The next day we were up early (for us) to catch our flight to Foz Do Iguasa. We were sad to leave Rio but pleased to leave our room at the Mellow Yellow hostel. The hostel was in a great location, had friendly, helpful and fun staff, but our room was pretty damp and dark.
Penny had booked us a quiet country hostel for our one night stay in Foz, which freaked me out a little when we started bombing down dirt roads into the middle of nowhere in our taxi. I also thought that the name of Hostel Natura might suggest there would be Germans and volleyball but luckily I was wrong. The place was beautiful and Edward, our host, was very helpful. We had a nice meal with him and his friend (we were the only guests!!) and watched a DVD. It all sounds lovely - except that it was about -7 and we were outside. Even our bedroom had no window.
After a freezing night Edward gave us a lift to the Iguassa Falls National Park where we stowed our bags in lockers and went to see the waterfalls. They were absolutely stunning. Pictures cannot do them any justice (if indeed I was able to add pictures to this blog!!). We got a little wet in places from the spray but it was well worth it.
That afternoon we got a couple of busses that took us from Foz in Brazil to Puerto Iguaca in Argentina. Id managed to lose my Brazilian visa waiver form so had some problems at the border. It seems I cannot enter Brazil again without paying a fine of about 40 pounds. We eventually got through and made our way to our hostel, Recidencial Uno, in Puerto which seems like a nice place. We unpacked and what did I find......my visa waiver.
We took a walk to a place called Tres Fronteras where you can stand in Argentina and see both Brazil and Paraguay, then had an amazing Argentinian steak for about 4 pounds!!
Today we got up early and got the bus back to Iguassa Falls to walk around the Argentinian side. We got much closer to most of the falls on trails through the jungle. Unfortunately it has rained all day.
Tomorrow we fly to Buenos Aires!
If anyone has sent me an email, can you send it again - things seem to have been deleted!
See you all soon
Love
Tim and Penny
