Hello all
Here?s the first update for those of you interested!
Our flight out from London was all on time and great, except there was not a single TV in the whole of Terminal 4 showing the football!! Thanks to regular texts from Simon (Penny?s brother) we kept up to date! We arrived in Sao Paolo early the next morning and hoped to get a good view over the city as we were just changing planes there. Unfortunately it was so misty you couldn?t see the ground until we had landed!! Quick change of planes and we were on to Rio arriving mid-morning. We got a taxi to the hostel, called Mellow Yellow, driven by a nice chap called Almeida who pointed out the sights. We checked in and went for straight to bed!
That afternoon we just wandered round the area - our hostel is right behind the Copacabana Palace Hotel and about 2 blocks from the beach. The next day we took the underground downtown and wandered round a nice market. Got back to the hostel early afternoon and went on a trip to the statue of Christ The Redeemer. The views were amazing.
Saturday we spent walking the entire length of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beaches taking in the sights and sounds. It?s been about 36 degrees most days so we were exhausted by the end.
Sunday has been my favourite day so far. We went up Sugar Loaf Mountain (walking as far as we could - about halfway - thanks Penny) and then getting the cable car the rest of the way. We saw some monkeys and more great views over the city - probably the most spectacular city I have ever seen. That evening we went to the footie at the Maracena Stadium!! Flamengo (the home team) beat Goias 3-1. The atmosphere was amazing and I made friends with an 18 stone man who literally dived on to me the first time FLamengo scored. He obviously enjoyed himself because he did it for the next two goals as well.
Today we?ve had a relaxing morning and are about to go on a tour of the Favelas (shanty towns). Apparently the money from the tours goes towards the schools so the locals are keen on tourists coming to the areas. We?re catching a flight to Iguassa Falls tomorrow which is on the border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, and we?re then off to Buenos Aires.
I?m not sure what photos we?ve been able to upload. The computers are a bit old and slow. Hopefully there?ll be one or two but there are a lot more for you all to see when we get back!! I?m sure you are all looking forward to that!
Lots of love
Tim and Penny.
