02-12-06 YOSEMITE
Yeah so, it took what seemed like ages to get there on the bus. The guy who was driving us there wouldnt stop talking either, so we werent able to catch up on any sleep. Around 11am, we arrived at the village, still with no idea as to where we were going to stay for the night. We went into the main office, and the only thing they had available was a lodge room, which werent coming cheap, at $154 a night, but unfortunately, that was the only option we had, so we had to go for it. The room wasnt to bad either, it had really nice view from the back, cable TV, which was excellent, a massage shower, and some other stuff, so all in all pretty good. So we quickly dumped our gear and headed out. The smell, when you came out the room was amazing, it was that tree/frsh air smell you often smell in wooded areas, or at ski resorts. That in itself told you where you were. The views were something else entirely. Those who have been to yosemite, will know that whichever way you look, you are amazed by the scenery. Snow topped ferns, atop massive collumns (is that spelt right??) or granite and other such rocks is truely an amazing site. so we walked over to a place called lower yosemite falls, which, we were told, this time of year dont really have a lot of water coming from it, but some was better than none. We took the "scenic" route if it were, we went over boulders the size of houses, and did some climbing along the way. When we got to the waterfall, we were interegued by it immediately...how cold was the water? bearing in mind, that the outside temp was probably somewhere around 3' celcius, the water was pretty cold. a bit colder in fact that we first thought, as we dipped out feet in it. We ventured around the splash pool to the base of the fall, where we dared each other to go into it, or who could stay in it for the longest. Some of the photos show us doing this.....silly silly boys! after nearly being froze to the spot, we thought it a good idea to head back to the room to grab a warm shower, eat something and maybe watch a bit of TV. This idea then turned into getting back, showering, eating whilst watching TV, then falling asleep. Next time i knew it, it was 8AM....oops.

Today we were going to leave Yosemite, but not until 5ish later that afternoon, and now it was 8am, so we had plenty of time do venture about still. We decided to go over and see the captain A.K.A El Capitan, which for whoever doesnt know is an enormous piece of rock, some 3000ft high, that towers over the valley, and pretty much dominates anything within a 200 mile radius. On our way to see him, in true brit style, we took a detour up a semi- recent rock fall, which was one of those tasks that promised good reward when we got to the top, as the view was sure to be amazing. It was also one of those ideas, that when stood at the bottom, seemed like an easy and simple task. Firstly, it was way higher than we first thought, and secondly, we nearly died by big rocks still falling down, well mostly the rocks that i displaced when walking up, that went hurtling towards ford. He did choose to go up 2nd though. So anyway, after much rock dodging, we got to the top, which fortunately rewarded us with the views we were after, definately well worth it. Only problem was we now needed to get down! As we headed down we were standing on big rocks, and i mean the size that compare to small cars, and they would start moving!! im sure if the ranger saw us, he would have called for the rescue team ASAP, but we did make it down in one piece. So onward we trotted to go see the captain. we got there eventually, took a few photos, but as soon as we arrived, we had to set off again to get our bus.
This was going to take us back to the train station in Merced, on a train to San Fran. It was only a 5 hour journey, but it seemed to take forever, but we eventually made it to our hostel, the green tortoise.....the same one I stayed in a while ago last time we came here.
So we got to San Fran on time around 10:30pm which was pretty good as i was about ready to hit the sack as it were. So we got into our room, and it was roasting, the heater for it had broken, so it was constantly on. Problem was, it would be simple enough to open the window and cancel the heat out, only we were right above a busy club, and on a busy road, so when the window was open, it was so noisy because of things still going on, but i eventually drifted off to the land of nod, thank god.
