04-12-06 SAN FRAN AGAIN
Woke pretty early today, so just enjoyed sitting in bed for a while messing about on the net, did you know that pigs dont sweat? i didnt either, plus where did they get the phrase "sweating like a pig" from then, if they dont? coonfusing, but interesting. anyway, as i had been to San Fran the other week, we decided to rent a bike for the day, that way, i could ride over the bridge and into the hills on the other side to see a bit more of the northern bay, and ford could see all he wanted to see along the way. So we went down to the harbour, and found out that the bikes can only be rented with either a credit card, or a $300 deposit, neither of which any of us had. i'm fast realising that maybe having a credit card with me would have been beneficial, but we werent going to leave that sum of money with anyone we didnt know, so the rental of bikes was out of the window. So now we had the day to do whatever. We decided to take the harbour cruise over to Alcatraz. I had seen it last time from afar, but i knew Ford wanted to do it also, so it made sense to wait until i came back with him. So we got on the Ferry and chugged over to the island. All i was expecting was a prison building, with maybe a few other things dotted around, but i was pleasantly suprised by what was there. You got given an audio tape thing, which you wore around your neck, and it talked you through the whole tour, which was really really interesting. It told you about the history of the prison, the "major" inmates and officers etc. It even told you about the occasions people tried to break out, which was pretty cool. so yeah, it probably lasted about an hour, then you were free to reign the island and see what was there. It helped that it was a gorgeous day, but the whole island looked nothing like a prison you'd expect if you listened to what people said about it, and the scenes from the film "escape from Alcatraz" with the pouring rain supposedly never happens, maybe 5 days in the year, they have rain, but never a big storm. All in all, it was quite a pleasant place. So we came back over to the mainland and headed for a walk down, again onto pier 39, and also down the port area. As Ford hadnt seen the GGB, or the wiggly road, we decided he would go down there, and i'd just meander back to the hostel, as i needed to do some washing and some other "chors". so Ford did his stuff, and met me back at the hostel. As We were still there, the hostel, 3 days a week, serves a free dinner. We werent staying, obviously, but tonight was one of the nights that they did. So we being the Cheeky chappies that we are stayed inside the hostel and got a free dinner, which was ace. So by the time dinner was finished, it was time for me to head down to the station, to catch my train up to Seattle. Ford was going back down to LA now, as he is going to watch them play in a couple of days, but his train was later on, an hour or so after mine, but he still walked down to the station with me. It wasn't until he said something to me, that i realised something. What he said to me was "so as of today, your not going to know anyone for the next 8months!" which immediately sent a reality check to my mind. It was true, as of now, i wasnt going to know a single person for 8months! christ, i knew it was coming, but it still made me think. I guess until now, i had always known that i'd be meeting back up with Ford, so didnt really feel alone at all, but now, i couldnt have felt it more!! oh well, this is where the fun starts i guess! So now im sat in Emeryville station, which is basically in San Fran, waiting for my train to Seattle, which is already 2 hours late! oh well, should be used to it by now with the amount of trains i've been on. If im bored on the train now, ill work out how many i have been on, and how far, and long i have been on them for....you see, this is what 24 hours on a train does to you!! so hopefully next time i speak, ill be in Seattle...when i dont really know, but sometime tomorrow i hope!
