So we arrived in Greece yesterday night, arrived at the hotel around 2am and crashed. We finally got on the road and headed for Mycenae. It is possible that we got a teensy bit lost…and by a teensy bit I mean about 45 solid minutes of lost-ness. However! We got there and it was incredible. There weren't very many people there and I was afraid it would be a bust, but no no, it was by far the most exciting part of my trip. We went to the museum first so Dad could get and idea of what was even going on. Then Dad went on a water hunt because apparently Greeks don't drink?? There were no water fountains.. That was kind of ironic considering in 1200 BC the Mycenaeans dug 18 meters into a mountain and were able to get water…yet in 2009 people can't even put a water fountain in.
Then we headed to Sparta, where we almost died about 9 or 10 times. Driving down a 1 mile stretch of freeway there are probably 5 or 6 "chapels" lining the freeway. Their chapel houses are our equivalent to putting a cross on highway. I'm really curious to know what the car/death rate is. But the moral of the story is that people are CRAZY drivers. If you think that someone qualifies for being a crazy driver if they cut you off…think again. Try having 4 cars side by side in 2 lanes. 3 going one way, and the 4th going the opposite (head on). This situation actually happened today. We were on a mountain and cars in Greece will pass you going around 100 km/hr (take in mind this is on a mtn. with hairpin turns). So Dad was getting ready to pass the car in front of him when some guy in a Toyota pick up truck comes zooming up the mountain from about 6 cars behind and so now it is like this:
-Head on car coming around the curve- Toyota Pickup- US- Car we were passing -
I don't know how we are still alive.
Anyways, the people of Greece are amazing. They are SO much nicer than the Italians, who came off as rude and annoying (total letdown). Tomorrow we have a relaxing day. I saw a shoe store that sells all shoes for 4-10 Euro!! Exciting! Then we will start our drive to Olympia.
Sorry this entries are more of a sort of rambling. Dad is kind of a sleep policeman. Infact he accidentally fell asleep now, and this is why i'm writing it.
