Tales from the other side of the plughole....
Hello there!!!!
Well I am a bit more settled now so will update you with what I have been up to. I have done so much already I know I am going to miss stuff out in this email. Damn it!!
So on my first day I was so spaced out from the flight I just went into Cairns and had a look round, its quite touristy here with loads of bars and resturants. There is a no beach but instead an esplande and a lagoon that you can swim in and sunbathe round. My hostel in Cairns is called Bohemia Resort and is really cool. I was initially sharing with 3 germans who seemed nice enough but they were only there for the first night and I didnt speak to them much as I was asleep from about 7pm - 8am on the first night! Second day I went and booked some trips which I will tell you about in a bit! So was just finding my feet and was getting used to not knowing anybody, it was actually quite daunting to start off with. I dont mind my own company but its really weird not having somebody that knows you to just say hi to! Didnt help that they kept throwing Germans in my room too so I couldnt really bond with them as well as an English person but hey I kept thinking things would get better (dont worry they have!).
So on Saturday I visited a village called Kurnada that is located in the rainforest just by Cairns. Its up in the mountains so to get to it I went up on the Scenic Railway that winds it way up the mountainside giving you some spectacular views into the Rainforest and of Cairns and the coast. There were some really beautiful sights such as Waterfalls which you should be able to see in my travel journal when I update it in a bit (Fingers crossed it works!). Then in Kuranda there are loads of Markets selling alot of touristy stuff but there was also original Aboriginal Art for sale which was so striking. I really wanted to buy some, I am really fascinated with the whole Aboriginal way of life. There was an aborigini playing a didgeridoo too which sounded fantastic. Then to get back down from the Mountain I went in a Cable Car over the top of the Rainforest and down the Mountain side. I was a little nervous about it as you are really high up , but was actually ok and so pleased I did it as the views were AMAZING!! (See pics). I could sit up in one of those cable cars looking at the scenary all day!
On Sunday I went to Cape Tribulation, part of the coast north of Cairns boardering the Daintree Rainforest. We drove up the Cook Highway taking in the beautiful coast and our tour guide 'Whales' was really funny and told us alot of stories and facts about the area we were passing through. We went on a River Cruise on the Daintree River looking for Crocodiles, we saw a baby one and a big one called Eric. Apparently Crocs can launch themselves 5ft so I was keeping welll back in the boat. Also they will stalk there prey and if you have a regular routine they will just watch you over and over again til they feel ready to strike!! Then we had a tour through the Rainforest and looked at different types of Trees, plants and animals. I was constantly waiting for a Spider to fall on my head but I was ok!
Then got dropped off at my hostel PK's!! I was staying up there for 2 nights in a wooden hut which was cool but a little scary as lots of gaps in the walls for bugs and stuff to get in! (They didnt though as far as I know!) Went and looked at the nearby beach - was absolutely beautiful white sand and bright blue water - never seen such a beautiful beach in real life.
The next day I went out to the Great Barrier Reef on a boat called the Rumrunner to go Snorkeling. Was BRILLIANT!!! The coral is absolutely stunning, so many different shapes and colours and so many different types of fish. I didnt find Nemo but I saw a Stingray and a Reef Shark - got the hell away from them as quick as I could! I was so proud of myself for being brave and doing the trip as I am not really an adventurous person but I really enjoyed myself. Also managed to burn myself real bad on my back, thighs and face - looking good!! Only bad thing is I didnt have an underwater camera so I have no pics really gutted. At least I dont have the evidence of me in a wetsuit ha ha - what a treat of a sight!!
On way back from Cape Trib we went to Mossmon Gorge a big crater full of fresh water you can swim in. And also visited Port Douglas a really pretty town just above Cairns.
Got back to Bohemia last night and met 2 really cool English people in my room so we went out to the bar together and I got absolutely hammered!! Went to the Woolshed which is infamous round here for where people go on a night out! I was dancing on tables as I am sure you can imagine! (For people who know Liverpool its just like the Raz but up a floor and stinks even worse!!). Still have the dollar sign stamp on my hand as I type this as I cant get the damn thing off! Didnt get in til 5 this morning so am feeling a little fragile today, supposed to be going on a Pub Crawl tonight as well hope I make it!
I start my Oz Experience on Friday so head off to Mission Beach then. Really looking forward to it, cant wait to see all the different places.
Having such a good time, definately pleased I have done it. Sometimes its hard being on your own but I am meeting loads of new cool people so each day gets better. Hopefully will see some of the people I have made friends with as I travel down the east coast. I really like being able to do what I want when I want though.
Anyway better and try put pics on travel log. Hope your all well, sorry about long email but so much to say!
Take Care - send me emails its really good to hear from you, miss u all. xxxx
