Initial thoughts about Buenos Aries
It is massive
The taxi driver was smoking
There were a lot of people around
It was going to be a lot of fun.
So as we got Moira off in a taxi it was just Lisa and I for the next 17 days until Elliot and Saskia join us for carnival. Exhausted and tired after the previous five weeks we just wanted to get to our hostel room, have some food and sleep. The hostel was a disappointment, I had booked it and I don't quite remember where I'd got the hostel from, it was not nice, the room was big but not great, after what we'd got use to on the trip the best we could say about the room was that it was clean. As we pulled the door shut the handle fell off, this could be a disastrous stay. Lisa's displeasure was all to clear.
We'd found a curry house in an inflight magazine and were off for some different food. There isn't a massive width of cuisine in south America, your choice is pizza, pasta, or meat, so a curry was going to be a rare treat. There are fourteen million people in BA, so to see Vicky sat in a restaurant on her own, was very weird. She came with us for the curry and it had been just Lisa and I for two hours. The curry was a nice change from steak, not great, but different.
After a leisurely lie in, we managed to find a pub with the rugby on. Then off for sightseeing and a walk. The Pink Palace is not a nightclub in soho, but the presidential palace for the Argentine president. It was open to the public and we got a look around, saw where Evita made her speech from, saw the cabinet room, and President Christina's office. The tour we did was in Spanish so I can't tell you anything about the place other than they are really really proud of Evita.
Buenos Aries is massive, with just six days there, there was no way we would get everything we wanted to do done.
After a siesta it was time for food, and on Lara's recommendation we went to La Caberra, it was amazing. We got there at nine, which is ridiculously early in BA, and there was a ninety minute wait. We put our name down and went to a bar and waited. It was well worth it, a starter of mocilla (black pudding), was accompanied by brochette and bread. All of which was superb. Then we had steak, cooked to perfection. All washed down by a lovely malbec, great recommendation by the legend Lara. Our waiter was fantastic, the food was delicious and wine lovely. All this for about £40, honestly I will never eat steak in the UK again.
Two weeks until El and Sas arrive.
The following morning we met up with super hiker Vicky and went to the market in San Telmo. It was already very hot, but the market was lovely, tango performances in the street, traditional music being played on another street corner. We didn't buy anything it was mainly art and antiques, but it was a nice and relaxing way to spend the morning. Then in the afternoon we found a bar hosting a free tango show, so we had dinner there, the food was terrible but the tango was fun, and all a lot cheaper than other tango shows we looked into. There was dancing, singing and a guy swinging balls around.
After that we took it easy, as we were in BA to relax.
