Routa 40, is a miserable road that stretches almost 5000 kilometres down Argentina in to Patagonia. For many stretches it is just a gravel road, no tarmac to be seen. For two days we traveled on this crazy road, and there is nothing there, as far as the eye can see, barren nothingness, just scrub land and a gravel road.
Occasionally there is a bird, occasionally a sheep but really there is just a whole lot of nothingness.
We travelled on this road for two straight days and it was long, uncomfortable and dusty. There was nothing to look forward to at the end of the first night either just a stay in a hotel straight out of a 1950's seaside resort. It was called the Belgrano in a town called Perito Moreno. PM is a shell of a town with nothing there, just a few kids clothes shop because let's be honest making babies is the only thing to do there. I once went to Prestatyn, it was that depressing. That was it for two days, just us the road and a truck. But it would be all worthwhile because soon we would be in El Chalten and we would be ice walking on a glacier.
