It's official....the state of Kansas is flat. Not a hill to be seen, just a sea of flatness....oh, and the occasional grain store. The grain stores are huge, (my picture doesn't do it justice) and they are always next to a rail road. Set up to load several rail cars at a time.
So from Kansas we headed south through Oklahoma. It wasn't as flat as we expected. In fact it was quite hilly and green, it looked a lot like England. The big surprise was how red the earth was, it made an interesting change to staring at endless wheat and corn fields. We drove straight through Oklahoma City, so nothing of interest to tell there and then on into Texas.
So we have been here in Fort Worth for 4 days now. The weather is gorgeous. It has been over 80 degrees everyday, a big change from Calgary. We are staying in a Studio 6 (off-shoot of Motel 6, for people who book rooms by the week), its cheap and very no-frills (have to make your own bed, what's up with that!). So far, we've spent most of our time driving around the neighbourhoods trying to get a feel for the different counties and seeing which one, if any we may like to live in someday. The highlights so far have been a trip out to Granbury, (a very pretty town south west of Fort Worth) and a walk down by the river. There was lots of wildlife everywhere, so much so I came millimetres from stepping on a snake. It was only about 12 inches long and very fast...lucky for him, or I would have been the proud owner of one snake-skin sandal! Another point worth mentioning is the freeways...they make the Deerfoot (Calgary) and the M25 (London) feel like a pleasant Sunday drive. They are totally crazy, at times up to 8 lanes wide and very fast. I am gradually getting used to them, though I have only driven on the weekend so far.
Not sure what we'll be up to for the next week. Watch this space.......
