Morning 1 on the train!
We slept until 10am, which is pretty cool, considering we are on a train!! It stopped twice in the night to collect a few passengers and then carried on. Sally slept through the first one and claims she woke for the second one, but I saw no evidence of stirring!!
We have made our beds into sofa's and had our breakfast of coffee, porridge, cheese, salami and gherkins! The last 3 parts were part of lunch yesterday and needed using up! They have a hoot water machine at the end of each carriage so we have a constant supply which is great. We have enough pot noodles etc to keep us happy and various tinned items to make them taste a bit less bland.
There is one Russian guy pacing the corridor as he talks on the phone, which is a bit annoying, but not too bad, and the stake smoke from the windowless smoking zone between carriages does drift in occasionally.
So it's 11.30am, and we have already travelled over 900km, more in 12 hours than we cycled in 14 days!! We have a transsiberian railway book which tells us where we are at any point, as long as we can see a km marker every so often. The first one we saw about 30 mins ago said 920km which puts us close to a city called Kirov (now called Vyatka) which was a fur trading town but is now an industrial and administrative town with attractive river front. It is raining and the train is moving slow and steady as we pass lots of cargo trains parked on the tracks (both sides of us).
The TV has 3 channels and looks like it will be old Russian movies all the way. Might be useful if we get bored at some point!
Oh and the toilets are great, cleaned regularly and have air ventilation which keeps it fresh and cool. It does make a really loud noise when it's flushed, which the whole carriage can hear, so handy if you are waiting for someone to come out!! The cabins are quite warm, roughly 18c do we are sat in shorts and tee shirts.
To be continued....
