We are finally aboard the transmongolian railway and on our way to Irkutsk, arriving in three days time! Our carriage is lovely, our cabin perfect, and Sally is already fast asleep! The train left Moscow at 11.45 and it is now 01.45 as I write this. I too will shortly head to sleep, and will continue this in the morning, but just wanted to get things started.
So, we are in first class, and in our carriage there are ten cabins, so 20 people max in our bit. So far we have spoken to an English couple in their late 30s who seem nice, and an Swiss couple about our age or younger who again seem nice enough. There are some Russians as well but not sure what they are like. I will try to give you more of a run down as we go.
Security is much better than expected. Not only do we have a normal lock you turn from inside, and a pull out lock that blocks the door from sliding open, we also have an electronic card, like a hotel key, which also immobilises the locks completely. Not bad for a train! Although we of course need to be careful and vigilant, we feel pretty safe and secure so that's a good start.
Our beds/sofas are comfy, and should provide good sleep! The train travels quite fast so you do get a constant motion and a dull chug of the wheels and all that like you would on any train, but the door seems to keep out most of the cabin noises!
There is one plug socket so we can charge iPad etc and believe it or not, there is a flat screen tv above the door! We have not turned it on yet but will do tomorrow at some point!!
Right, to bed, and I will pick this up in the morning!
Night night
