REST DAY! Such a good one too, after a good night's sleep we headed off to Pukklepop, the Belgium music festival Sally had been to a few times before and wanted to take me to. It was awesome and so very different to any uk (and according to Sally, any Australian) festival, with hardly any security and people generally behaving well considering all the "special cigarettes" they were openly smoking!
The journey to the festival site was pretty horrible though, with thousands of kids trying to crush onto bendy busses in 30c heat! Sally managed to get a seat, but her joy was short lived as I had to stand over and within minutes the heat turned me and those around me into balls of sweat, which proceeded to drop on all those smugly sitting down!! (Sally: ewww SO gross - especially when it's not your husband's sweat dripping onto you!). It then became clear as we got closer to the tickets check gates that we needed id. I only had my bank card, and Sally had nothing, causing her to frantically proclaim "I am his wife!" as I handed over the tickets! Brilliant!!!
Once into the festival itself, we headed straight to the first artist, Australian band the Jezabels. Very cool, and when the lead singer said she was from Sydney Australia, you could spot the Aussies in the crowd from the loud cheers in one small pocket near the front!
We sat at the back for Snoop Lion as he is now called, which was cool, and then on to Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men, who I would highly recommend checking out, really enjoyed them. We took advantage of the shade as the temperature soared to what felt like 35c by watching some obscure band playing country bluegrass to about 50 people, followed by a trip to the dance tents to watch KOAN Sound and Dirtyphonics, which was fun but we were easily the most sober in there and so enjoyed people watching more than the music! Some unusual sights that's for sure!!
Next up, and the highlight of the festival for both of us, was Tinie Temper, fresh from performing at the Olympic Closing ceremony. He filled the marquee and the area outside and we had fantastic standing positions in the centre by the sound desk. He was AWESOME, and the crowd knew all the words to all of his songs, which created an awesome atmosphere.
A short break and then back to the same marquee to watch Hot Chip, who had just as big a crowd and really got them going! We had the same position and the sound was fantastic, playing new and classic tracks and also one 80's synth track which clearly played a part in their musical influences. We could literally feel the bass in our chests it was that loud.
As soon as they finished we headed to the Main Stage to wait for headliner Bjork. To be fair I like her, but in small doses, and selected tracks, so when she came out with about 20 female backing singers dressed in pagan costumes and face paint, and Bjork wearing the weirdest wig and plastic tubing dress, I knew I was in for a long night... And she didn't disappoint, singing unknown songs with weird noises coming out of musicians and singers, and the big screens filled with stomach churning time lapse photography of a seal being consumed from the inside out by lots of underwater creatures. We endured about 8 songs (2 of which Sally knew, and none I did) before we made the decision to head home. (Sally: of course unlike Dan I was OVERJOYED when the choir appeared, and even though she played a lot of fairly esoteric stuff, it was BEAUTIFUL - except for the sea creatures eating the dead seal - that was gross)
But the evening didn't end there, as we jumped on a bus we thought was going back to the city, but turned out to be going to collect hundreds of drunk and excitable campers from one of the distant campsites, and then bring us back to where we started! And then we had to wait 30 mins for the next 'correct' bus!! But our night ended on a high as Sally remembered where a kebab shop was and we had a lovely healthy meal to round off the day!
Check out the album, Day 6 Pics for a snapshot of the day!
