Otago Rail Trail Day 2 and 3....
Two days in one due to fatigue for this particular blog. So this is a long one.
30 miles of pain - all up hill on rough surface - not to mention the head wind.......It just goes on and on........We were told that Tiger Hill was the steepest bit. Not quite so sure about that.
Thankfully we had new arrivals to support the push. We were joined once again by Andrea and Tony who flew back down from Auckland again to support TMP after a week at work. Thankfully for us as not only are they providing support on the track - they also provide excellent catering services - we can recommend them for weddings, christenings, funerals and bar mitzvah's - for any readers!! David's Uncle Sam and Aunt Christina put in an appearance late on Saturday night looking very tired after a long journey in from the UK. Fantastic to see them minus about 36 hours sleep!
The support team once again were excellent. Of course it wouldn't be a normal day without one or two mishaps along the way. Where to start..?? Maybe a good place is with young (ish) Nick. We had a bright and early start to get us well down the track. Unfortunately - there was a wrong turning that resulted in a bit of off roading to get to the start position for the day (and an hours delay). We weren't the only ones however - as a distressed phone call from Andrea revealed that Tony was driving down Swamp Road and could we find it on the map!
Not to worry however the team converged at the start point (Andrea, Tony, Al, Nick and Lynn) and another day got off to a great start. There were others hiccups such as Lynn cycling down the road with the car keys in her pocket - this was actually planned so that Nick could get some exercise in with a bit of sprinting so that he didn't loose any fitness. Ah that wonderful Lynn always thinking of others (I wonder who is writing this blog....?). We were delighted to see that the new arrivals (Sam and Christina) were suitably dressed for the occasion - some may say too well - as Sam apparently thought it was another day at the office (lovely shirt, cuff links etc - although the trousers tucked into socks was an interesting look - and did you really need the tie Sam?).
We had the Pom Pom team out to cheer on Dave at the highest point - assuring him that it was all down hill from there - only to realise that this was complete crap!
Anyway - way to go Dave - 30 miles up hill for the last 2 days - gruelling to say the least. But onward and upward as they say - not too far to go now.
