Rail trail day 1.
The day started early and sadly it was Mikes last day with us. There was a light dusting of snow on the hills ensuring a baltic start to the morning. The Otago Rail Trail proved to be a very social scene. Lots of people had heard of Dave and stopped to chat making it a very enjoyable day (for the support team anyway).
Once again the support crew did an excellent job apart from one slight misunderstanding. Nick - drove the support car to the next stop off point 10 miles up the road and cycled back to meet Dave, Mike and Lynn. However he neglected to bring the butties (again thanks Meg - despite sleepless nights with sick baby she still made our lunch) (he insists that he asked us if we had enough food - make up your own minds about this). So David had the scraps out of the bottom of Lynn's rucksack, Lynn survived on an apple, banana and 5 wine gums, Mike chewed his arm off and Nick was OK cos he scoffed two butties at the car (I'm alright jack..........).
Al made a brief appearance - he cycled 12 miles for a 5 minute catch up only to get a call to say he had to return because Hamish was going to the doctor. We however think this was a ruse because he found out about the lack of sustenance - and he was also knackered and decided that it was all too much hard work.
David climbed up 17.5 miles all day on rough gravel track. The countryside was stunning however this was not appreciated by David who remarked on the various colours and textures of the gravel but he hadn't noticed much else. He was heard to remark on a particularly challenging section 'if I don't get any f...k..ng donations for this'..... and he ran out of energy to say more.
So despite rising temperatures (the sun eventually shone) - Dave managed to climb half way up Tiger Hill - ending the day on a high note - in more ways than one!
