With Hoi An complete and our new buddy in tow, we jumped on to yet another bus trip to Nha Trang. This was probably my worst yet. Minimal leg room meant a seriously uncomfortable ride! We arrived in Nha Trang in the early hours of the morning, and slightly unexpectedly, it was raining! This was meant to be a beach town, but it was soaked. So we headed off to the guesthouse I had booked, only to once again be told they had over booked and had to move us. The guy was pretty cool though, made sure the new place was ok, paid for the taxi there and even dropped the price! We had 2 rooms, and to our delight, 2 huge double beds (Ryan had 3 beds in his room!). We had a little kip and headed out to explore!
Nha Trang is renouned for its scuba diving and generally nice beaches. Since none of us dive, we headed for a beach front bar and tucked into some Tiger beers and steak & chips. The rice and noodles was getting a bit too much so we needed some grease! Far too much time was spent at that bar, so we headed back to freshen up and partay. The hotel was actually in a good location, so we bar hopped for a bit before settling at Oasis. They had the Saturday footy on, so as I sat miserably watching Arsenal do nowt, the drinks were well and truly flowing, which is when Alan came out to play. I can't remember if I've introduced you to him (as these blog posts are so slow!), but Alan is a long time friend of Ryan's. During his teaching days in China, Ryan would always ask Alan for advice in any situation, be it what to have for dinner, or where to go that night. So we decided to leave our night (and every other night) up to Alan.
Some say Alan swam the English Channel...backwards. To us, he's a legend. To everyone else...he's just your average 6 sided dice (He's also named after Alan from "The Hangover" for anyone that's curious).
So the rules for Alan are as follows. We pick 2 choices. Have a beer or a shot. Eat local or McD's. You get the idea. We nominate each choice to odd or even numbers. The 1 additional rule is that who ever rolls, if a 5 is rolled, they must buy shots for everyone at the table!
Simple enough. We've come to the conclusion that Alan is evil. He always wants us to carry the party on. So night 1 ended in Why Not bar and a gorgeous baguette sandwich, fresh of a side street stall, filled with chicken, an omlette and salad. It was so good, I went out and got 2 more! Only this time I had my hoody on and got told I looked really shifty by some random London guy. Must be the beard! Oh, almost forgot to mention that Gary and I got harassed by women of the night when getting our food, which is why I took the hoody the 2nd time! They gave me no trouble on the 2nd trip :)
Day 2 was pretty much spent on the beach. The waves were pretty big and were battering us left, right and centre! A chilled beach day was needed, so we basically sat around like lazy sods all day in the sun. :)
The highlight of my holiday so far came that evening, seeing United get spanked by Liverpool! Gary wasn't too pleased, but Ryan (being a Leeds fan) and myself were loving it. We did our best to liven the place up, as Oasis was once again heaving. Pretty sure every one thought we were English hooligans rather than football fans!
So once the football finished, Gary, for reasons I still can't get my head round, decided to speak to THE biggest Russian guy ever, about his hat. This guy was scary as hell, and his friend next to him didn't seem too nice either. We came to the conclusion they were gay, until one said he fancied this Welsh girl sat in front of us! She was not impressed, (my knowledge of all things Welsh, and even my Swansea accent had her impressed though, all thanks to my Welsh family!). At this point, Gary was still being harassed by the Russian, and we almost got him to roll Alan, till he heard the 5 rule, when he then wimped out!
We left everyone behind to explore the Sailing/Sailors Club (can't remember the name!) on the beach. Good night with a good crowd, ending with a few more chicken baguettes. Om nom.
We were meant to catch the 7am bus to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), but we were in no fit state, and the hotel staff were going mad trying to wake us. They finally realised we were going to catch the later one, and left us to snooze away! Another night bus followed (along with me cracking my shin on the bus), and we arrived in Saigon the following morning.
