Final day of the holiday. We woke later than intended, and were treated to two herons fishing on the river Teviot, a few yards away from the caravan. Carolyn saw a kingfisher fly past. I kept an eye out but did not see it. We then continued packing and loading the car.
Later I heard the heron and saw it perched on the tree opposite the caravan, on the edge of the steep riverbank. It then took off and flew overhead and around the caravan park. I went to look at the river, the fish would make a splash as they surfaced and as I was looking down, I saw a flash of blue zooming up the river. It was the kingfisher.
These moments of distraction were wonderful to see but almost proved disastrous. We had packed the car and about to set off home when...nothing. The car did not start. Some warning lights went out and the oil level was checked. It was low but above the minimum. Fortunately the owner of the site passed by and recalled that someone who had the doors unlocked for a while had a similar problem. It seems that if the doors remain unlocked for a while, the immobiliser kicks in. The solution? Lock and unlock the doors.
After a sigh of relief, we started the journey home.
