Hermitage Castle
The ruins of this castle can be found in the wilderness of the Scottish Borders. This stronghold has a history dating back to the 13th century but today, only the stone facade remains.
On the day of our visit, the wind was blowing wildly and there was sunshine and heavy rain showers in equal measure. Hermitage Castle has a forgiving presence in the vast countryside of rolling hills and many narrow roads had to be travelled in order to get there, although we took a different (and easier but not as picturesque) route out.
The landscape looks stunningly beautiful in the sunshine and bleak in the rain. I would imagine it to be a combination of both when covered in snow.
There is also the ruins of a chapel nearby (as seen in one of the pics). The original castle was built in 1240 but has not survived (probably because it was constructed of wood). The stone castle was originally constructed circa 1360.
