Cam's Great Escapade
Its so annoying, there are absoloutly no pictures of Cambodia or Veitnam but 4 of Mount Fuji so these will have to do.
well anyway, we got to Veitnam via a much less stressful border crossing (actually they are all stressful but i dont think anything can beat cambodia) and got to saigon, veitnam. you could literally see the wealth increase as you got over the border, there were roads!!! with no holes in them!!!!!! and people didnt live in shacks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! okay i did actually really like cambodia but unfortunatly there is a point when you start enjoying luxuries like air con and french fries. im a western girl through and through (although im getting pretty good with the chopsticks.) we spent a few days there trying out the veitnamese food by overordering loads, our first meal we had 24 plates on our table. then on to the pretty village of Hoi An where I am currently writing this journal. we had the choice of a 15 hour train journey or a 24 hour bus journey and settled on the train pretty quickly. the sound of an overnight train sounded pretty exciting and we got on it was like something out of a tin tin book or something, actually everything in Veitnam looks like tin tin minus the opium dens. unfortunatly our room was about the size of a small bathroom and slept 6 people, they had also over booked our carraige so we ended up with 8 altogether and we were getting pretty claustrophobic and started laughing hystericaly. it wasnt helped by the fact there were no seats and had to spend the whole journey lying down, not as fun as it sounds. i didnt get a particularly good nights sleep because i saw a cockroach just crawling along the wall infront of my face and spent the rest of the night paranoid that one would crawl on my face. i got to sleep pretty late and was awoken at 6 am by military marching songs playing so loudly that we had to shout to hear eachother. it was not a fun experience and im not looking forward to doing it again on the way up to hanoi, but it did provide lots of hysterical laughter and the people in our carraige were really nice and gave us fruit covered in sesame seeds.
hoi an is lovely and like a little museum, the whole town is protected by unesco. its also very french and this morning i had a pain au chocolat and chocolate waffles for breakfast, HEAVEN! (im chocolate deprived) also lots of chinese influence from the merchants the travelled here and the streets have chinese temples and are lit up by hundreds of lanterns at night. v v pretty. there is also A LOT of tailor made clothes shops and at first we were going to resist until we found out a tailor made dress is 7 pounds, i might have to buy a whole wardrobe. the shops have loads of fashion magazines and you just choose a style and then your material and they measure you up. i got talked into a dress made of greeny japanese silk which hopefuly is going to be lovely, ive yet to see but i have a 2nd fitting tomorrow and ill keep you updated. i might also get a tailor made duffle coat for 15 pounds, but the thought of buying a coat in this temperature seems ridiculous. itll come in handy for those cold liverpool months though.
anyway im enjoying veitnam emensely and wich i could have more time here. id probably get into horrible debt by buying millions of clothes though so its for the best. we move on to either hue or hanoi in three days and for now we are going to find some food and watch the footy. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!! i actually really hope we dont win, that would be so annoying id completly miss it. send me messages everyone and let me know how you are and remind me to buy you presents (ahaha bribery!)
lots and lots of love camilla x x x x x
