Cam's Great Escapade
G'day mates. So ive gotten half way round the world and it only took a month since i decided to take the scenic route. Despite my original reservations about Indionesia it turned out to be the most wondeful place. I got out of touristville and went to the little village of Ubud which is a not so secret backpacker hideaway. I had a fine old time zipping around on my bicycle looking at temples. Theres no shortage of temples to keep you occupied in Bali, theres pretty much one every other house like the Indionesian Starbucks (or should that be Starbucks being the English temple, I'm not sure.)
Anyway there was lots to do, I went to see some caves and this little monk boy took me down to the river and urged me to take all my clothes off and go swimming like the locals. Anyway he seemed pretty trustworthy so I did but he later turned out to be not a boy but a 23 year old man. But it was alright, he was really nice and we made sandcastles and he showed me a waterfall upstream and had a good old chat about football. Thats one thing I've learnt about travelling, if you know a bit about football you can have a conversation with anyone, its a worldwide obsession. I also befriended some really nice people and we played cards every night with this gang of locals who tried and succeded to get us drunk on potent rice wine called Arak.
So anyway it was a bit sad to leave them all behind and I almost didnt make it to Australia since my flight was at quarter past midnight on the 2nd of June and instead of being v v v late on the 2nd of July as I foolishly thought it was of course v v v early so I missed my flight. Luckily they wangled it so I'd fly via Melbourne and Adelaide and and didnt charge me anything, my gaurdian angel works over time for me. So after a whistlestop tour of Australian airports I finally got to the small and unpromising airport of Darwin. As Bill hilariously commented, it sounds very unevolved. Darwin consists of 3 streets of bars and hostels and things seem to revolve heavily around alcohol. I'm not sure if thats just Australia in general but after being in a little Indionesian village it takes a while to get used to living in a 24 hour freshers week. My hostel is pretty cool though, it has an outside spa and swimming pool, a huge big screen, hammocks, a bar, ect ect. I was so clueless when I first arrived though, I hadnt got any cutlery or plates and had to have my first meal in a mug. The best thing about being in Australia is CHEESE!!! God damn i missed it so much. But I'm missing Thai food now so my stomach is just never satisfied. Anyway after seeing the sights of Darwin (the mall, the harbour, the....thats it) I've decided to head down to Cairns and meet my cousin Imogen and her mates so that should be fun. Im missing culture though and I'm seriously missing intelligent conversation. I found some Dutch people which is a relief the Australian and Canadians are so unrelentlessy cheery. I think that Australians are alright when diluted by lots of English people but when youre hit by a large, drunk mob of them you start wanting to reach for the razors, they are just so dumb.
By the way, if any Darwinian inhabitants are reading this, im sorry......you come from such a crap city, MWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!
