On from kyoto we were guna head to hiroshima but all the hostels were booked, forgot to mention in the kyoto hostel we meet loads of americansfrom something called semester at sea. 700 american college kids on a boat winging round the world, get a couple of days f port at atime. So 700 pple all heading the same directionas us, kinda made it hard to get acommodation, though alot of them were really sound so i will say nothing bad about them. Headed instead to osaka to wait out the americans, didnt really do much, saw some sights, the sky building is amazing (Dave u wud hav lovedit, verycool architecture) a mexican girl asked to havphoto with me as she had never seen a ginger, lol. After a couple of days here we headed to hiroshima, meet up with mart again, got chattin to some other pple, some guys from bak home who were just bout to go bak to uni, lucky b******s!!! but hiroshima was all about the peace memorial. It gives a unbiased report on the events that led up to the bombing. Including extracts from the leaders at the time, documents, signed letters from scientists like Einstein. Continues on to explain the after effects to present day. I honestly cant put into words how i felt in that place, the museum which has the clothing from children who basically melted in it , u can still see the blood stains and read of how the child was found or had somehow found the strength to crawl home burned head to foot so they could die with their family. Read poems from survivors and watch short interviews , watching pple tell the story of how they found their relatives, brothers sisters mums dads dead or dying in the most horrific way. i saw a piece of stone steps that hav been preserved which hav a black stain on them which is all that is left of the person who was sitting there 200m from the initial explosion, literally vaporised. But there were also stories of how the survivors recount their most painful memories for students to make sure pple remember. It was an incredibly sad and extremely humbling experience, one i will never forget and one i think more pple from the west should see, especially our generation to who nuclear war is just a phrase.
The next place we went was to the nearby island with a Taro gate in the water just off the shore, caught the ferry just as the sun was setting, really amazing. We both sat quietly on the island for a while, they light up the gate at night which is cool and the dear that live on the island (yes as in bambi) try and steal food from ur pockets. It was excatly wot was needed after such an incredibly intense morning. We made it bak to the hostel and just chilled and chatted with pple there before leaving the next day to go bak to tokyo
