Nadeane & Dean's Trip
Hi everyone,
We've had a eventful few days. On the way out of Cusco, our truck lost a tyre, and by lost a tyre I mean, it flew off and rolled down the road, narrowly missing a cow in its path. This meant we were stuck on the side of the road for about four hours while we awaited the delivery of some parts from Cusco to fix the truck. It was made more interesting as all of the local children from the neighbouring farms spotted us gringos on the side of the road and came out to play a game of soccer with us . Some of the kids couldn't have been older than four years old, and they were so good at soccer... unbelievable. We finally made it top Puno late that night and stayed in a nice hotel. We were up at 8 the next morning for our tour of Lake Titicaca. This is the highest lake in the world, the surface is a 3,800m above sea level and measures 179km long and 69km wide. Just massive. Our tour took us to Uros, the floating reed islands, where indigenous people still live. The islands are amazingly solid, they are just made with reeds from the lake and up to twenty families live on one island. When they have a fight, they just cut the island down the middle - True story! From there we made our way to Amantani, an actual island in the middle of lake Titicaca which still houses an indigenous population known as Aymara indians. After being introduced to our host family, an older couple named Dimitri and Paola, we were invited to play a friendly game of soccer with the local boys of the island. Amazingly, due to the amount of english soccer fans in our group, we won. Dean shocked everyone with is apparent talent on the soccer field, at his first attempt, scoring a goal for our team. He earned the nickname Becks (after David Beckham)! After the game, the local kids came out and we played ball with them, until dinner. After dinner, our family dressed us up in their local costume and we headed to a party in the town hall, lots of dancing and laughing followed. It was by far one of the best experiences we've had so far, getting to know the local people and understand more about their way of life. We had no electricity, but were still very comfortable, if not a little chilly! I'll have to post the photos another time as for some reason this computer I'm on won't let me do it. Dóh!! We are back in Puno tomight and heading to Bolivia tomorrow...
Chat soon,
