Nadeane & Dean's Trip
Hi everyone, we have just arrived back from the gruelling Inca Trail safe and sound and have just uploaded our photos.
Day one of the trail was prety easy. It was mostly flat with only a few big uphill sections. We started off at about 9am and arrived at our first campsite at around 2pm where the porters cooked us up an amazing three course lunch - hardly roughing it!! We spent the rest of the afternoon in the mess tent playing cards and chinese whispers with the rest of our group while the heavens opened and we had a huge downpour which lasted all night. We awoke at 7 the next day and it was still raining. We had some ridiculous ponchos to wear, which provided no relief from the relentless rain, and we were soaked to the core. The plan for the day was for about 4 hours hiking then stop for an hour or two for lunch and then ascend Dead Womans Pass, which is the highest and steepest part of the trail. Unfortunately Dean sped off in front of me at a the beginning of the trail, and I was left by myself. I didñ't see the lunch tent set up and just kept walking. I walked for 7 hours straight without lunch until I arrived at that nights campsite, and realised that the rest of the group were still hours behind!!! At lunch, they realised I was missing, and so sent a porter out after me, in case I had fallen down a cliff. Dean stayed and ate his lunch... happily skipping along and meeting me at the campsite where he assured me he wasn't worried about me at all! Everyone had a good laugh at how it was possible to miss lunch and keep going . But man was I ever hungry at the end of that day!! This is why we also don't have any photos of the 2nd day as Dean had the camera. The third day was a good hiking day- I ate lunch and we saw a bunch of ruins along the way. The final day was again cold and wet as we made the final two hour hike to Machu Picchu. The mountain itself was covered in clouds at first so we couldn't see a thing, but luckily it cleared periodically and we got a good view of the place, It is quite breathtaking and so amazing how they managed to construct it all those years ago.
We then caught a bus to Aguas Calientes, a town at the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain and strolled the markets before a 5 hour train and bus ride back to Cusco. The hot shower we got was the best feeling in the world! And i think I had the best nights sleep ever last night! We are both a bit sore and weary today and are thinking about getting a massage to ease the aches and pains. But it was all worth it- we had the best time and it's definitely been a highlight!
We've got two more days in Cusco before heading to Puno and then leaving Peru and heading to La Paz in Bolivia. We'll keep in touch over the next few days...
Have fun!
