Nadeane & Dean's Trip
What a busy few days! After being so brave, Nadeane decided against the Nazca flight and got to pack up the tent all by herself! It was a 3 seater plane and quite a bumpy ride. The photos dont do the lines any justice, they are on an enormous scale and its hard to believe how they were created over hundreds of kilometres of desert thousands of years ago. From Nazca, we travelled to Chauchilla cemetary which is the final resting place for thousands of mummies from over 500 years ago. we saw about 15 that were on display, many others were robbed. We finished the day at Peurta Inka, which is 240 kilometres from Cusco. The Inka people covered this distance in 24 hours by placing runners at 7km intervals. A beach party followed and there were many sore heads the next morning! The next stop for up was Arequipa, a town of 1 million people situated 2500metres above sea level. We checked out the convent and the museum that housed Juanita the frozen ice maiden that is still perfectly preserved. We tried Ostrich and Alpaca meat but we havnt yet tried the local delicacy - deep fried whole guinea pig!
The next morning had us up at 2am to rush to Colca Canyon to spot the condors. We ended up seeing only 1, but the views of the canyon were magnificent! On the way there, we got to an altitude of 4900 metres, and you can really tell the difference. We are now used to the altitude after a few days of nausea and headaches. We stayed the night at a small town called Chivay located in the middle of the Peruvian Andes. Today was spent on the road to Cuzco - a whole 11 hours on the road! We have a nice comfortable room all to ourselves which makes a pleasant change from camping with no showers or toilets! (stinky!) We are spending tomorow looking around Cuzco and acclimatising to the altitude (3200 metres) in preparation for our 44km hike the next day along the inka trail. It is very hard to get a deep breath here and walking up a set of stairs is a struggle so wish us luck!
Talk to you all after the trail!
