Day 3
On the road by 6:30am again today, leaving the icy Coonabarabran. Not many cars on the road, although two early morning roos quickly ensured we were awake. Then about 45 minutes in to the trip "thud thud thud thud", no it wasn't Laura's stomach, it was a flat rear tyre on the drivers side. Great. Initially thought we might have been lucky as it only appeared to be flat on the bottom, but no it was flat all the way around. Luckily the Kluger is designed well so we didn't have to empty the entire boot. We were all but done, I was putting the spare back underneath the rear of the car, and Laura was removing the jack when the only car out of the ten that drove past stopped and offered to help, a nice country boy - let's call him Jim-Bob. It was then that I realised that Jim-Bob couldn't see me, and could only see the pretty blonde at the curb side. Jim-Bob's demeanour quickly changed when he heard a deep male voice emanating from under the car thanking him for his offer to help but that we were alright. Jim-Bob left kinda quickly. Got everything back together, and realised I wouldn't be any good on a yacht winching a spinnaker.
Had a quick stop over in Gunnedah, as we had to buy a new tyre as the other was cactus. Lovely town, and everyone was very helpful.
More roadworks again. Drove past 'The Double D Caravan Park' doubt Laura would be able to stay there.
Went via Tamworth, thought we'd go check out the Big Golden Guitar. It is a big guitar. That is golden. Underwhelming really. More road works. Grabbed some lunch in Armidale, and due to the loss of time in the morning ate on the road. I was a bit tired from driving (and the yachting practice), so time for Lauz to drive. It's funny how your mind wanders and weird things pop in to your head on long drives. Do penguins have knees? Is a frogs bum water tight? Who discovered milk? Surely that had to be a dare. "Hey Lissy, dare you to go pull on one of those things hanging from that cow, and what ever comes out, you have to drink". "Ummm, OK!". What if she pulled on the wrong one?! I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Anyway back to reality. The scenery was pretty, but pretty boring mostly. Road works. Quick fuel stop in Tenterfield, and I took over driving duties as I knew the mountains were ahead. Good driving fun for me, Laura felt sick as a dog though (cue Dr Evil visual). More road works - on the mountain. Drove to Casino, which is a strange name for a town as they don't even have one. Lauz drove the rest of the way, and we made it to the resort just on 6pm. A bit of a stuff up with the room, but got that sorted. Then the fun part. Went over and surprised James and Logan, their reactions were priceless. Well worth all the secrecy! Porter was a little champ the whole way, and made the trip a lot easier.
