Hi everyone
It's been a while since I blogged, but a lot has been happening. First of all, Ian and I are both absolutely OK. Secondly, we had a bit of an accident with the campervan and ended up in a ditch, upside down two days ago. Both pretty much OK physically - a bit bashed around, but nothing broken - but rather shell-shocked. We were on a rough bit of gravel road which had just been "remade" which means that the tracks were taken away and the road is like driving on marbles. Unfortunately, there are no signs to tell you about this and after hours, off and on, of driving on the road with no problems, the van suddenly lost all grip on the road. The end result - upside down in ditch. My guardian angel was definitely looking after us as the ditch was tidal, but the tide was out, and I managed to avoid the concrete post we were heading for !!!
Anyway, we met THE most wonderful couple - a shepherd and his wife - who arranged tractors to tow the van out and food and put us up and let us use their phone and gave us a lift to a bigger town in the morning. They would not take a penny from us and were absolutely fantastic.
We spent yesterday washing loads of stuff to try and get the petrol out of everything - some things more successfully than others - and generally trying to relax and get our minds back on track.
So now we are (gently) making our way to the Franz Jozef and Fox Glaciers, where we shall probably stay for a couple of days to have a good look around - as well as having a bit of a rest.
Apart from the accident, we're having a great time. New Zealand is beautiful, even when you have to drive for miles and miles to get to anything at all. At least the scenery is great as you trundle along.
I hope everyone is fine and that the snow has gone away. There are loads of decorations up all over the place here but it seems all wrong in the sunshine (although it has been pretty cold and very, very windy the further south we've been). I'm sure you're all getting ready for the Christmas season.
My money is nearly out now so I shall sign off with lots and lots of love to everyone.
Issy (and Ian)
