Somehow slept in till 11am today :s
After a strong caffeine fix en route to another Market in the plaza right next to our hostel.
Finally bought a matte kit! Bring on the regular caffeine fixes, might just have to attach a cup holder to me for the rest of my trip. Only been an hour since my first coffee and i'm onto my next latte
and chocco cake!
Matte is part of the Uruguayan culture, it's an infusion of yerba mate (dried ground leaves) in hot water. It looks like someone is drinking a pot of marijuana (might have to stroll around London streets with my matte to se what reactions i get). People share it amongst friends passibg it around and drinking through straw called bombilla. It's like in London you se most people walking around with a 'starbucks' but here you walk witha thermost under your shoulders and a pot in the other hand. They even design stylish leather bags which you keep your kit in a you walk around town.
We've been warned against visiting the old town at night as it's supposed to be dangerous for tourists, so we thought we would check it our during the day. Being a weekday definately makes a diference here, the little streets are full of people and we don't feel like the only population in Ciudad Vieja.
The people of Montevideo are absolutely lovely, being the lemons that we are we just walked upwards the sea as that's were old city is on the map. As we were about to turn into one of the side streets a local man came out and ranted something in Spanish to us, then another acted out that it wasn't so safe for us to walk down there! Whereas back home I'm sure people would just direct you straight to Brixton if you asked! The Uruguayian people seem very proud of their country, they will go out of their way to help tourists even if you don't ask, conversate with you on busses and give you a list of places to go to.
Old town has a nicer atmosphere, small pebbled streets with local less commercialised stores.
Along the pier is the Buquebus terminal where we needed to purchase our tickets for Beunos Aires!!
That out of the way, it was hippie market time where we all managed to add another bracelet to our collection!
My food senses were triggered by the smell of freshly made Churros with sprinkled sugar! After yet another sugar fix it was off to Montevideos grande casino, where Reens played well and won money on roulette! Now that's just asking for celebratory drinks...we'll have 3 piece of cake with a 1 litre bottle of beer, red label whisky and finally fullfilling my craving for a glass of wine!
As for how the rest of the night went, you will have to wait for me to upload the video on facebook! I warn you will be in stiches of laughter.
Quote of the day:
'guys why are the lights off?'
