Had to get up even earlier today, as us irresponsible drunkens got so distracted with happy hour at the hostel that we forgot to do our packing and even worse we hadn't booked our hostel for the next night.
With an hour to go we rushed and booked the first hostel that was available. Fingers crossed it's fit for glam-packers.
Slightly worried about what we got up to last night...as soon as I walked into the reception lounge area the night staff started laughing at me and askig if i was hungover! Clearly not a good sign, oh well at least we provided him some entertainment!
Crazy loony driver who looked like he should be in an episode of Sopranos or in the Mafia took us to the Argentina border where we wil catch a flight to Montevideo. He gave us all a hug as we left, like we were hIs daughters. Gotta love the Brazilian culture and etiquette. Since we've been travelling lots of the taxi drivers have been giving us advice, telling us to stay safe, they treat you as your own, sonething which
Officially fallen in love with Brazil, this is not goodbye, we will be back...now it's time to leave our mark on Uruguay.
We've heard lots of horror stories of full on strip searches at the airport, so as we were approaching security we messed our hair up trying to look ugly as possible! Instead of strip searching they just decided to search my whole rucksack, yet Reens gets away with having liquids in her bag!
This was the last time Reens had her favourite snack/lunch pesto and crisps in bread! At the time of eating it she was happy an hour later and a whole bottle of pesto demolished, she never wants to see pesto again! Ha!
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay,it's a modern city that feels like a town. We're staying in Ciudad Vieja (old city). It's bursting with historical character and has many museums and art galleries...bring on the culturism! (is that even a word?!)
Hola Montevideo! Just gone from 25•c to 13•c (someone please remind me again why we choose to leave the heat).
Wohoo busses in Uruguay don't have the ridiculous barriers that they have in Rio, which means we can actually get on the bus without getting stuck with our backpacks wohooo no humiliation. Darn it, spoke to soon, the bus from the airport to te hostel was packed! On the plus side they have music on busses here and neon blue lights..might as well of had some vodka and rum and turned it into a party bus! Kinda odd how people jump onto the bus to sell random biscuits, chocolates etc to passeners and then get off on the next stop.
The 25 minute bus journey definately gave me an insight into Uruguay. Initially the houses were quite large and with open space, reminded me of USA. As the bus went further downtown you noticed the graffiti on all the buildings and how the wealth changed.
Learnt never to judge a person too quickly, when we boarded the bus the driver seemed really moody and not intrested in helping tourists. Turns out towards end of bus route he called is over to see where we were going and directed us and told us when to get off!
Getting off the bus we walked as quick as we could to the hostel as nobody seemed to be around on the streets, had a light airy almost horror film atmosphere to it!
Whenever we check into hostels, first thing the girls do is check out the bathroom and when they return I can judge by their expressions what's it like. Reens came back with a smug smile saying the bathroom is fine but not princess standards, it has a shower curtain with the tiniest claustrophobic shower space : (
After being told the safe and not so safe areas of Montevideo, we decided to take an evening stroll to get the feel of our new city. It feels alot like Madrid with nice architecture, plaza places, coffee shops, fountains. However as you walk around you notice alot of graffiti.
Outside one of the coffee shops we stumbbled across Locks Fountain; the legend of this young fountain tells us that if a lock with the initial of two people in love is placed in it, they will return together to the fountain and their love will be forever locked. It was soo cute, you would be suprised at the amount of padlocks around and how long they have been there for. Think I may need to start this in London although I'm sure I'l get arrested for some sort of vandalism charge.
