Wakey wakey rise and shine. The thought of moving out of creepy mansion had us all jumping out of bed!
We made an excuse to the receptionist saying we were leaving Mendoza and had a bus to catch, so she insisted on booking us a taxi to the bus terminal!
Off to hostel Lao! From the minute we walked in, the place felt like home. The hostal was amazing. Continuous coffee and tea : ) finally make use of my thermost.
Our room wasn't even ready and they allowed us to have breakfast. Straight away booked the bike wine tour with Baccus.
As it was already midday we took a cab to the bike shop so we could fit in as many wineries as possible. 4 appointments booked, a highlighted map of our route and of course our bikes we were ready to go. We were even given helmets due to drunk cycling : s
Excited this is the one thing I've been looking forward to! In my head I had already decided I wanted to extend our stay in Mendoza.
So nice to be back on a bike, last adventure was in Florinopolis.
Mission of the day is to convert Reens, Tanna and Devi into wine fans!
First appointment of the day, Pulmary wine. It's not an easy job trying to follow a map whilst cycling. A few missed turns and we found it! We were treated to a glass of Rose outside in the sun. I could of easily sat there all day.
Pulmary is an organic family owned bodega. From the outside it looks like a warehouse, buy inside was lot of barrels and machinery. We all tried Cabernet Savignon Donaria red wines as we were shown the different wine tanks. The girls didn't like the red wine, somehow their glasses ended up in my hands! Having had a light breakfast, I was soon feeling the effects of the wine. Uh oh daytime drunk! Better focus more on the roads!
Next stop was Clos de Chacras a much larger scale vineyard. Before our visit we decided to eat lunch at their gourmet restaurant, after all we were beggining to feel a bit tipsy.
As an appertif we were given Ginger ice cream with a tiny watercress salad, it was yuuummm. For starters had a yummy melted cheese with roasted veg which went perfectly with the red wine they served. A pumpkin ravioli got mains with Devi's glass of wine which once again somehow ended up on my side of the table!! Not having much success in changing the girls mind. Desert time a chocolate pot with lemon sorbet and toffee popcorn! Definately sobered up. I'm usually a White wine fan but red wine is really grown on me.
Back on the bikes, had a near miss accident with a car pulling out!
Long cycle to Alta Vista our final vineyard. We had to have mini pit stops to catch our breath. The roads were amazing, long wide roads and tall autumn trees.
Alta vista is a mixture of a modern and traditional bodega. Tried a Distinctive Torrentes which we all loved. There was a huge vineyard with a large garden and restaurant. Their top wine is made from 70% malbec which ages for 15 years! The younger line ferments for 10 days maximum.
After visiting the cellar and fermention room it was tasting time! Finally a wine which the girls like wohooo; Torrentes White wine.
Time to cycle to the chocolate, olive and liquor factory. You can begin to understand why today is one of my favourite days in South America!
Bless the owner who spoke little English. She just ushered us to the table with jars of different flavoured jams, dulche de leche (Tanna's back on the leche)...yum the chocolate and dulche! After the sweet table it was time for the savoury, olive pattes!
One of my most favourite days in our travels so far! Already plante the seed in staying an extra night in Mendoza.
After returning our bikes, we jumped on the bus back into town, but the bus driver forgot to tell us when to get off!
Finally back at the hostel and greeted by John who told us to have some tea to warm up whilst he sorted out our room. He knows us British people very well...we all love a cup of tea.
BF time! Reens had hissy fit or as we say b**** fit over the beds as she didn't want top bunk! Poor guy who was standing in our room awkwardly.
Showered up it's time for din din before coming back to meet John for a drink of Fernett with coke, local drink tastes of pine eucalyptus.
Oopsy we ate too much! Came back shattered ended up watching DVD on the couch with the rest of the hostal. Well out goes the plan to do johns wine tasting session. Instead me and John had a bottle of Pinot Noir. So nice to finally have a wine companion! My poor liver somehow managed to finish the whole bottle between us!
4am time for much needed sleep!
Quote of the day:
'can I try? No? Yes thankyou'
