So it's Sunday on our big adventure weekend and today was definitely the biggest adventure yet! We went to Waitomo and into the depths of the glow worm caves!
We started our caving adventure with black water rafting through the cave on rubber tubes. We got wet suited up and headed down into the depths of the cave with a quick practice for jumping off waterfalls whilst in the cave!
The caves were so cool, we spent a few hours in the cave, crawling, swimming, wading, walking and floating through the water in the cave. We had to jump off different waterfalls throughout the cave which was so fun! The most scary was jumping off the largest waterfall in the cave to reach the rest of the water to carry on our exploring!
We saw stalactites and stalagmites, glow worms lighting up the cave and even an eel swimming around!
We spent a few hours in the cave and when our adventure there had finished we had a hot shower to heat up from the freezing water!
Then we went to the Kiwi house and saw a few kiwi birds and other native birds of New Zealand. This was really interesting! We learnt a lot about the wildlife over here and also about all the endangered species they have. As well as birds we saw some reptiles like geckos. They were so funny to watch.
We then headed back to the caves for another adventure later on in the afternoon. This time it was a dry walk and we didn't touch much water so the tour was much warmer! During this caving adventure we saw more stalagmites and stalactites and even more glow worms, during this tour we learnt more about the structure and the history of the cave. The cave was discovered by a Maori man who found about 30 dogs in the opening to the cave one day, he returned home and gathered some of his friends and they attacked the dogs and ate them for dinner before venturing into the cave.
During the second caving adventure an earthquake struck Wellington, although you can't feel an earthquake underground, you can hear it! It sounded like a train going past! Luckily there wasn't too much damage caused by the earthquake!
The caves were so much fun! It was a scary, fun, amazing and unique adventure, the glow worms were so pretty and mesmerising lighting up the cave. What an adventure we had today!
