We're leaving Koh Phayam tomorrow and heading to the jungles. We've had a great time on the island. Yesturday we went for a trek into the island and walked to the local village where the tourists don't go. There were only many small huts, a school, and a bizziarly situated christian church - no stores. The school was very rudimentary. The kids sit only on the concrete floors and all ages of kids in one class. The dogs run in and out of the school and the kids have to leave the school to use a sketchy bathroom. It was a bit unnerving because no one spoke any English and we were not very welcomed. It was so good to see how so many people live but I was also so glad to get out of there.
The boogie boarding was awesome. It was so natural to get into the wave vibe. We would catch a few great waves and look beside and see Gav,Rob, or Myron screaming along the wave with me with big s*** eating grins and then we would just hang out in the water looking out to sea for the next set of big waves. While I was waiting for the next waves I thought, this is like life, you get these great in the moment experiences where past and future don't exist and then the lull lets you reflect on the past or dream about the future. . . very chill experience.
Myron and Gavin went hiking along the beaches a couple of days ago and saw a family of sea otters and a mass plot of bugs. The entire ground was alive with these creepy crawly creatures. Yum.
We have to walk about 3kms to get to the restaurants from our hut and last night when we were walking home we got caught in a monsoon rainfall. As we were running through the rain we were splashing through the beach water and the water was illuminating with algae that sparkled a blueish/white light.
The people have been both wonderful and terrible. . . . true for everywhere. One good lesson on travelling I have had the unpleasurable chance to experience was - never pay full for anything in advance.
Gavin is really, really missing home right now. There have been a few tears lately so if any of you wish to send him a note, he'd love to hear from you.
Take care and we think of you all often.
