Hi All,
Tomorrow we leave to go to Krabi. Gavin and I are meeting up with Deb, Nicole and Rob for a couple of days here in Koh Phayam. I highly recommend spending some time on this island if you plan to travel to Thailand. Because it is such as small island, it is so easy to mix with Thais, learn a few thai words, and take in a little better picture of how many many people live. Being over here, nearly halfway around the world, has been a great way to do some serious self reflecting. It has made me feel so insignificant compared to the big, intricate world full of cultures, languages, technologies, villages with no running water or electricty (but somehow seem to have cell phones). . . . I feel like a little spec of dust in a vast expanse of space. When I'm travelling alone, I'm nobodies friend, co-worker, mom, or girlfriend to the thousands of faces I see, I'm just a traveller on a journey. It'a a pretty big feeling to know I'm so small.
I had a little taste of Thai reality today. I go outside of my hut to lay out on the beach in the beautiful sand. I make a pillow with the sand and then lay my beach sheet out. I've got my bottled water, knockoff sunnies, and perfect little backpack from Mountain Equipment Co-op, and I'm reading the one and only book I've taken with me, Slum Dog Millionaire. Well I keep getting this wif of strong smelling urine. I think, thats just some open sewer pipe with the wind blowing towards me. . . so I go back to reading. . . the smell is just too strong to not investigate. Well, it turns out I've unearthed a Thai outdoor urinal and I'm lying down tanning myself on it. Yep, I'm so oblivious to reality my mind just can't see what is so obvious. . . so now I look around my surroundings. Right beside where I WAS tanning, some Thais are carrying some bamboo polls to build a shack with, they are working away in this 40 degree heat with no power tools, a woman is washing clothes in a garbage bin, and some people are making food in these outdoor makeshift kitchens. . . . What can I say, I'm so grateful for this trip.
