An excursion day. After a nice onboard breakfast of french toast we hopped on the tour bus at 9am and our guide Michael took us to 2 castles, 1 residence and to lunch.
Firstly a 90 minute drive up the coast to Hamlets Castle (Kronborg). A magnificent place on the coast. Learnt about the tax system for boats wanting to enter the Baltic past this, the narrowest gap between Denmark and Sweden. Fire destroyed much of the castle including many of the tapestries but some remained. The largest banquet hall in Europe.
Back on the bus and off to the Royal Family's summer palace, saw the changing of the guard. Lunch nearby, a beautiful smorgasbord, beer and cake.
Back on the bus to the second castle (Fredericksborg). Again fire destroyed much of it, except the church. The church was magnificent, the gardens similarly so, incredible ceilings, again hopefully the photos do it justice.
The commentary was excellent, Michael is a pro, he told us has has homes in Copenhagen and New York and spends time each year doing guide work in Copenhagen, Rome, France and New York.
Back to the boat for a quiet dinner. At around 7:30pm we had departed Copenhagen and sailed close to Kronborg as we headed north to Skagen.
Back to our room by 9pm. Its become our habit to sleep by 10pm and for me its up again around 5:30am.
