Brazil... home of Caprioskas, so many tropical fruits & warm humid weather!! It reminded us a lot of Christmas time in Sydney.. We arrived in Rio or one night before we caught the bus along the Costa Verde & boat to Ilha Grande, a big tropical jungle of an island that is part of Brazil´s National Parks & protected from over development. We stayed in a gorgeous Pousada Oasis on the beach at the quiet end and did some great long walks across the island ( on slippery mud trails so Kate almost stacked it a few times in her sandals!!) passing chattering monkeys, snails the size of a hand, frogs, birds and gorgeous bright coloured butterflies to end up at pretty little beaches..
We met 2 lovely girls from NZ who had been living in London for the last 10 years and got into the local Caprinas ( rocket fuel cheap local rum mixed with so much crushed lime & a little sugar.. taste great on the way down but pretty rough the next day!! After that we learnt to switch to Caprivodkas ( Caprioskas with a slightly higher quality of booze in them!) It was good fun to be on Holidays with the Brazilians as they defo know how to enjoy themselves!! We met a lovely couple from San Paulo & had a fun night with them and Carol & Sarah, ending up at a Samba/Electro club night!!
We found a simple little beach hut that served amazing mixed seafood moquecha which was brimming with an abundance of fresh fish, squid, octopus.. so delicious we decided to have our christmas day lunch there overlooking the beach with a nice Irish couple we spent Christmas with. Christmas day didn´t really feel like Christmas but we had a nice sunny day & went to the beach, had lunch & then a battle of the IPODS back at our pousada with the Irish couple, we each had a turn at playing our top 4 songs which then turned into a night full of each playing our fave selections from our IPODS in various music categories and getting very enthusiastic about it the more drinks we consumed until we ended up the night with our fave song of all time and a jump in the pool!
The next day we headed back to Rio, with some time to explore Santa Teresa ( a pretty little bohemian area in Rio) we were staying in Flamengo. The next day we headed out to the Furnicular into the National Park to marvel at the impressive Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks all of Rio with fantastic views of the city. We then headed to Copacabana with its blazing white endless stretches of sand with was jam packed with people of all shapes & sizes in various G string bikinis ( you go girls i say!!) and little shorts for the boys..
All in all we had a fun very quick visit in Rio & felt relatively safe as we didnt carry any valuables out with us at all & were pretty aware of what was going on all the time. ´The next visit we would definitely include a visit to Lapa which is reknowned for its great Samba music!!
