We had a really relaxing time in Salvador, we stayed in a lovely hostel close to Bahia Beach with amazing breakfasts!! heaps of tropical fruits and interesting local things like tapioca and cous cous, baked manioca, banana jam.... Each morning we would get up really early for a walk and swim on the beach before it got too hot ans then come back for a siesta..
The local lunch places were all buffet style * beans, rice, more beans and some meat that was paid for by the weight of your plate and it was good to try some local dishes.
The Bahian influenced music is fabulous!! Lots of african drumming and rythmns that just make you want to dance! We stumbled across an amazing live band in Peloringno at about 6pm on night and everyone was dancing and we joined in and had so much fun with the locals teaching us their incredibly sexy hip shaking moves! its amazing how even though we could hardly speak portuguese and they couldnt speak english the language of smiles and dancing was enough to make friends and a girl and her brothers even drove us home to save us on a cab fair at the end!!
New Years Eve was interesting, the tradition is to dress all in white * Kate wore her white cotton pj pants coz she doesnt own any white clothes!!! and there was a huge street party all along the beach and the streets around the lighthouse with live bands on and hundreds of stalls selling caprioskas, beers, food etc. We saw 2 locals that we had danced with in Peloringno which was cool it made us feel at home!! It was funny though as lots of Brazilans kept warning us to be very careful and not get to close to the stage. At midnight there was a huge fireworks display and people sprayed bottles of champers everywhere and the 2 boys we were dancing with had a great time getting us soaked and asking peter to pour it over their heads!! After midnight we made our way to the beach where the tradition is to jump over 7 waves and make 7 wishes.. a lot of people also throw flower offerings into the sea and for the few days leading up to it we saw lots of flowers on the beach.. The beach was soo crowded but we got down there and did our jumping which was fun! Things started getting pretty messy not to long after midnight so we headed home and i think it was one of the earliest new years eve bedtimes we have had!!
We missed and were thinking of all our friends at home and wondering how you guys were enjoying your parties and festivals etc!
A few people in our hostel got robbed but we didn't take anything out with us so we were fine.
